Top 5 Winter Movies to Check Out: 2017 Edition!
by Edward Baillargeon
It looks like it’s that time of year again – the time where we find ourselves going back to theaters. So far, 2017 has a lot of films that were awesome, pleasant surprises, disappointments, or were just plain bad from the start. Without further-ado, here is my list of the Top 5 Movies to Check Out this winter.

5. The Disaster Artist (December 8th)
If you are a film buff like myself, you may have heard of or have seen the infamous “so-bad-it’s-good” movie known as The Room, and have wondered how was this masterpiece of bad made. Now this movie will give you the answer. Based on the true story and the book of the same name by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell, The Disaster Artist depicts the meeting and early friendship of Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero, and their story behind the 2003 cult film The Room, a film often hailed as the Citizen Kane of bad movies, the troubled production of it and their respective careers after the surprising success of the film. With an all-star cast including James & Dave Franco as Wiseau and Sestero, along with Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, and Zac Efron, The Disaster Artist is a must watch for any fan of “so-bad-it’s-good” movies. The making of the disaster will come to theaters on December 8th.

4. Murder on the Orient Express (November 10th)
One genre of movies and book that I do enjoy is some mysteries and this one sparks my curiosity, since I’m reading the book the time I’m writing this. Based on the classic novel of the same name by Agatha Christie, Murder on the Orient Express follows Belgian detective Hercule Poirot as he solves a mystery on a train that unfolds into a stylish & suspenseful mystery with thirteen suspects to find the murderer before he strikes again. Featuring a well-known cast like Kenneth Branagh, Pénelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Daisy Ridley, Murder on the Orient Express should be a great mystery to investigate this holiday season. The investigation will arrive in theaters on November 10th.

3. Thor: Ragnarok (November 3rd)
It seems to feel like this year is the best year for comic book/superhero movies possibly ever and we should thank Marvel Studios. After the successes of both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel Studios gives us their final feature of this year, Thor: Ragnarok. Set after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor, held captive on the planet Sakaar without his hammer, must win a gladiatorial duel against an old friend, the Hulk, in order to return to Asgard in time to stop the villainous Hela and the impending Ragnarök, the doom of the Asgardian civilization. With the returns of Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Thor: Ragnarok has a chance of being the best film in Marvel’s weaker trilogy. The god of thunder will storm back into theaters in IMAX 3D on November 3rd.

2. Coco (November 22nd)
When it comes to animated features, 2017 was considered to be “meh” compared to the amazing year we had last year. We’ve had our share of great films and bad films that shall not be named, but we should close the year out with a bang. After a string of sequels this decade, as well as a couple of original films here and there, Pixar Animation Studios returns to the big screen with the musical fantasy adventure, Coco. Directed by the Oscar winning director of Toy Story 3, Lee Unkrich, Coco follows a boy named Miguel who dreams of being a musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz, despite his family’s generation-old ban on music. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel and his dog Dante find themselves in the Land of the Dead where they meet a charming trickster named Hector and set off on a journey to unlock the story behind Miguel’s family history. Featuring an all-Latino cast, so thankfully there are no whitewashing controversies, an original song by the Oscar winning songwriters behind Frozen, and is obviously NOT a rip-off of The Book of Life, Coco is the must-see animated film this holiday season. The film will be released in theaters in 3D on November 22nd.

1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (December 15th)
If you remember last year’s Top 5 list, it was obvious that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would be number 1 last year. So that tradition continues this year and the hype train for this film is just as big as it was before and in the future! In the next chapter of the multi-billion dollar blockbuster sci-fi saga, The Last Jedi, Rey continues her epic journey to becoming a Jedi with help from the long-lost Jedi legend, Luke Skywalker. With no major production troubles in the news, unlike future films in the franchise, and most of the cast from The Force Awakens returning like Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, and the final film performance of Carrie Fisher, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the must-see blockbuster this holiday season! The Jedi will return to theaters in IMAX 3D on December 15th.
