The United States lost to Venezuela 3–2 in the 2026 World Baseball Classic championship game in Miami. Due to the loss, Team USA fell to the same fate as in the 2023 WBC final, losing in the bottom of the ninth, while Venezuela earned its first championship in tournament history.

The game was close the entire time and felt tense from the start. Venezuela jumped out early, taking a 2–0 lead with a sacrifice fly and a solo home run. Their pitching controlled the game through most of the first seven innings, limiting the U.S. offense and not allowing many solid hits.

For a while, it looked like the U.S. lineup couldn’t get anything going. Even with big names like Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper, the team struggled to put together hits against Venezuela’s pitching staff, which kept the pressure on all game.

Then in the eighth inning, everything changed. Bryce Harper hit a clutch two-run home run to tie the game 2–2. It was one of the biggest moments of the game and gave the U.S. a real chance to take control late.

But Venezuela responded immediately. In the ninth inning, Eugenio Suárez hit a go-ahead double that brought in the winning run. That ended up becoming the play that would decide the game.

From there, Venezuela closed it out without any mistakes. Their closer finished the game cleanly, and the final out ended the U.S. comeback attempt.

The biggest reason the US lost was because of Venezuela’s pitching. Venezuela’s pitchers held the U.S. to very few hits for most of the game and didn’t allow many scoring opportunities outside of Harper’s home run. On the other side, the U.S. pitching was solid but couldn’t secure one last stop in the ninth inning.

The loss is especially tough for Team USA because it marks their second straight defeat in a WBC final. After making it this far again, they were just one inning away from possibly winning the title.

For Venezuela, this win is a huge moment. It’s their first World Baseball Classic championship, and it shows how strong their team was throughout the tournament. Players like Eugenio Suárez and Wilyer Abreu stepped up in big moments, and their pitching stayed consistent from start to finish.

In the end, the game came down to a few key moments: Harper’s home run to tie it, and Suárez’s double to win it. The teams were evenly matched, but Venezuela made one more play when it mattered most.
