While some might shy away from history, Williamsville East offers a History Club to ensure it isn’t forgotten. Run by Mrs. Calleri and Mrs. Fey-Daly, History Club became active during COVID, when Williamsville East students became more interested in our world’s past.
History is a very important subject not just in our schools, but in our government. According to advisor Mrs. Fey-Daly, “Humans tend to repeat patterns throughout history.” When a student joins History Club, they are able to learn these patterns throughout history and learn how people break these patterns throughout history. Even though it seems as if students need a lot of prior knowledge to join, James Barr, member, said, “If you are taking or have taken Global One you will succeed in History Club.” This was also reassured by another active member, Lily Barr.
History Club offers a broad range of history and activities. When most were carving pumpkins last Halloween, the History Club carved potatoes. This event was a historical representation of the potato carving in Ireland that started in the late 1500s. Just like pumpkins, they decorated the potatoes like humans. Ireland wasn’t their only focus the last two years.
Last year for Valentine’s Day they offered a trivia game incorporating black historical figures to celebrate black history month. Many of us overlook the historical significance of Buffalo, but not History Club. They brought in a guest speaker to inform the members about First Ladies that have had an impact on the Buffalo community.
Be on the lookout for the next History Club meeting on the announcements!
