On Tuesday, November 2nd, the city of New York rose from its five boroughs to elect Zohran Mamdani. The 34-year-old mayoral elect’s campaign defeated the independent Andrew Cuomo—the former governor—and Republican nominee Curtis Silwa. Running on a democratic socialist platform, Mamdami’s name is one for the history books, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor, first mayor of South Asian heritage, and first mayor born in Africa. He’ll also become the city’s youngest mayor in over a century.

In his victory speech, Mamdani confidently proclaimed that “the conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this.”

Mamdani began his political career in 2020, being elected to the state Legislature in 2020. As a state assemblyman, his charismatic youth and personable campaign platforms of free buses, universal child care, rent freezes, and city-owned grocery stores made him popular with NYC’s young working class. Concerns regarding his youth, relative inexperience, and “Tax the rich” platform have been present since the beginnings of his campaign, but only time will tell of its delivery and consequences.

According to the City’s Board of Elections, this year, over two million New Yorkers voted in the mayoral election—the largest turnout for a mayoral election in more than fifty years. With approximately 90% of the votes counted for, Mamdani held a nine-point lead over Cuomo, the runner-up independent.

Mamdani’s rise in popularity gives weight to a new strategy for the Democrats: embracing more progressive candidates rather than center-leaning alternatives. In years past, the Democrats had implemented a more centrist strategy in the hopes of taking back swing voters who had “given up” on the party. However, with Mamdani receiving late-campaign endorsements from New York Governor Kathy Hochul and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, change may very well be in the air.

Zorhan Mamdani’s win in NYC has drawn attention from across the country, including in DC. US President Donald Trump—who endorsed Cuomo on the eve of the election—had previously made statements threatening to withhold federal funds from the city and even arrest/deport the mayoral-elect if he were to win. During Mamdani’s victory speech, Trump posted the statement:

 “…AND SO IT BEGINS!”

The American public will watch what unfolds.
