It’s that time of year again, Valentine’s Day! We are all familiar with the annual carnation drive, where one can buy a carnation for a dollar. This year we are doing Hershey Kisses instead of carnations, so I’m sure many are looking forward to the chocolate. But did you know about Sources of Strength’s big Valentine’s Day Project. The team members set up multiple stations to participate, including them actively making rounds in the commons and providing students with the tools to write a special note for one of their teachers on paper hearts. No matter how you feel about the nature of Valentine’s Day, I think we can all agree that it’s a great opportunity to show our appreciation for the wonderful teachers and staff at East.

The sources of Strength Valentine’s Day initiative started on January 31st. Each of the heart shaped cards will be displayed on a wall for students to see the valentines they wrote to. Afterwards, teachers will then receive the cards made out to them.

When asked how students can participate, Junior, Noushin Rifah said, “Kids can participate in the commons and the main hall near the main office. Peer leaders will be walking around during their free period in the commons to each table asking if the students would like to participate.” The activity is short and sweet, but most importantly, it comes from the heart.

She also added that, “I think it helps students realize that they do have valuable mentors in their lives and that by writing these cards, teachers and mentors feel appreciated. Not only this, but students realize their sources of strength. This campaign is just yet another way of creating a positive environment with positive energy.” The aforementioned statements truly describe not only what Sources of Strength is all about, but the East community as a whole.

To the teachers and mentors in the school building. I give you a special thank you on behalf of my fellow East students. We wouldn’t be the people we are today without you! Enjoy your Valentine’s Day everyone!
