With its release date approaching, Avengers: Doomsday is already becoming one of the most anticipated movies of 2026. The upcoming Marvel film brings together characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the movie is set to return the Avengers to the big screen on December 18, 2026.
One of the biggest parts of the movie is its impressive cast. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time he is playing Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, Anthony Mackie returns as Captain America, and Paul Rudd returns as Ant-Man. The cast also includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and Simu Liu as Shang-Chi.
The movie also brings several X-Men characters into the story. Patrick Stewart returns as Professor Charles Xavier, while Ian McKellen returns as Magneto. James Marsden returns as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn returns as Mystique, Alan Cumming returns as Nightcrawler, and Kelsey Grammer returns as Beast. Channing Tatum will also appear as Gambit after previously playing the character in Deadpool & Wolverine.
However, the large cast is not the only thing making Avengers: Doomsday important. The movie is expected to bring together different universes within the Marvel story. Heroes from different universes will face a major threat, continuing the Multiverse Saga and setting up another major chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the center of the story is Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr.’s return is especially interesting because of his previous role as Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man. Instead of returning as the character audiences knew for years, Downey is taking on a completely different role as one of Marvel’s most important villains. His new role gives the movie a connection to the earlier Avengers films while introducing a completely different character.
The return of the Russo brothers also adds another connection to the original Avengers storyline. The directors previously worked on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War , Avengers: Infinity War , and Avengers: Endgame. Their return brings the same directors behind some of Marvel’s biggest films back to the franchise.
Overall, Avengers: Doomsday is preparing to introduce one of Marvel’s biggest team-ups yet. With the return of familiar heroes, the addition of the X-Men and Fantastic Four, Robert Downey Jr.’s new role as Doctor Doom, and the return of the Russo brothers, the movie represents another major chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With its December 18 release date approaching, audiences will soon see how these characters come together.
