After a contentious debate in June, the music department’s 2027 trip destination has been decided: Boston! Other proposed cities included Philadelphia, New York City, and Detroit, but Boston ultimately won. The trip will be from April 9-11, 2027, and will include a variety of fun-filled and educational activities for students.

The itinerary will start with a  tour of the music facilities at Boston University or the New England Conservatory; select instrumental and vocal groups will also have the opportunity to have a masterclass with one of the music professors.  Mrs. Ieda, the orchestra director, remarked that Boston University is what they’re leaning towards. BU is not only a big school, but has an extensive music program; in fact, it’s also connected to the famous Tangledwood program through the BUTI (Boston University Tanglewood Institute),  a premier summer music training program for advanced musicians between the ages of 14 and 20. Indeed, it’s a great opportunity for WEHS musicians to learn about opportunities to continue their musical journey  in college.

Other destinations include the Boston Tea Party Museum, the Boston Commons & Public Gardens, Copley Place, the Freedom Trail, Paul Revere House and the Old North Church, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market.  Philharmonic Orchestra President Shahd Khoury expressed how she’s looking forward to everything, be it “the early morning bus ride, exploring Boston Common, delicious seafood, the Duck Boat tour, and especially the Boston Symphony Orchestra.” As  one of the main student planners for this trip, Shahd also explained how fundraising for the trip would be  equally important. “We’re definitely planning on lots of fundraising, from the Taste of East to bake sales and more,” she shared.

One of the most important parts of the trip, according to Mrs. Ieda, is allowing students to bond with one another. There are always “newly found friendships from these trips,” and perhaps this is the reason why alumni say the most memorable part about the WEHS music department are these trips. Mrs. Ieda additionally explained how the itinerary is catered to a variety of interests. As one of the most historic towns in our country, Boston is going to be “a lot of learning and walking.” Better yet, our resident US History scholar and amazing APUSH teacher Mrs. Kantz will be coming on this trip!

Other than history, the trip will also include plenty of cultural activities, including the trip to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, one of the top 5 orchestras in the US! There will be opportunities to see some of Boston’s wonderful architecture in the park designed by the famous architect Frederick Law Olmstead, who also designed Delaware Park here in Buffalo.

Throughout the next couple of months, logistical details will need to be finalized, including hotel details, cost, interest forms, deposits, and the itinerary. If you’re a WEHS music student, definitely watch your WITSmail and announcements for more information!  Cheers to another wonderful music trip!
