The Academy Awards are widely considered the biggest night of the year in Hollywood to celebrate the best of the best films of the year. But, this year, we still got that, but there was the occasional poke at Donald Trump and it got old fast. The Trump jokes this year were similar in a way like them poking fun at the #OscarsSoWhite movement last year. Today, I’m not going down into the rabbit hole of politics, I’m instead going to list off which movies took home the gold, how many awards they got, and maybe some that were not deserved.
The big winner at the Oscars this year was La La Land, of course, with 6 wins for Best Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for “City of Stars”. In second place was Moonlight with 3 wins for Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, Best Adapted Screenplay, and managed to beat La La Land for Best Picture due to a mishap with the wrong envelope after the La La Land crew gave their speeches before having Moonlight’s crew to come up and accept the award. And tied each with 2 wins are Hacksaw Ridge and Manchester by the Sea, with the Mel Gibson war film winning for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing, and the Kenneth Lonergan drama winning for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Casey Affleck.
Other movies that got a win were Fences for Best Supporting Actress for Viola Davis, O.J.: Made in America for Best Documentary Feature, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for Best Costume Design, The Jungle Book for Best Visual Effects, Arrival for Best Sound Editing, and Zootopia winning Best Disney Movie, I mean Best Animated Feature (#OscarsSoDisney), over other animated films like Kubo and the Two Strings from stop-motion animation studio Laika and Disney’s other, and sometimes forgotten, contender Moana. And finally, the biggest tragedy at this year’s Oscars has to be the category of Best Makeup and Hairstyling where Star Trek Beyond was beaten by Suicide Squad, which is now, unfortunately, an Oscar winning movie with the DC Extended Universe with 1 Oscar and the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 0 Oscars.
Congratulations to those who got those who got well deserved wins and let’s see what happens at the 90th Academy Awards next year in February 2018.
