Lady Flames Victorious over Spartan Counterparts

0

For East, one of the biggest rivals for any sport, whether it be fall, winter, or spring, is undoubtedly North. Our sister school is well known and acknowledged as the “sports” school of our district. Oftentimes, this rivalry will spur both teams on to try their best, and this competitive spirit brings out the best in everyone.

Just ask the swimmers. Though North is definitely not the fastest team around (that honor would have to be given to Clarence and Orchard Park), they are the only meet that the team will make sure to win with a single-minded intensity. The Lady Flames went up against North the first of October, a tense meet in which North’s pool echoed continuously with cheering and screaming from both sides. Every race ended with raucous hollering as the winner of the event was announced, and by the end of the meet, at least half of the crowd was deafened by the jubilant roars of the 400-yard freestyle relay.

On land, the Lady Flames were able to defeat the Lady Spartans in early October on the field hockey field, a win that was unpredicted and tear-jerking. Julie Adams, defensive starter, was quoted to say “The second the game ended, I cried! I couldn’t believe that we had won.” North’s field hockey team has been known to be competitive in past years, as it has won first place at the New York State championship in 2010. The field hockey (affectionately termed “fhockey”) team was rightfully cheerful after their win. Eleni Casseri (grade 12) exclaimed “it was Coach Coyne’s first win against North in her whole high school career, and for us as seniors to be able to share this moment was just unbelievable!”

The past few wins by Williamsville East teams have been not only great games in and of themselves, but have been opportunities for our students to display their stellar sportsmanship and character. The added bonus of winning the aforementioned meet and game against a long-term rival was just the cherry on top of great games played by both teams.

NBA Western Conference Preview

0

Last season ended with a heat pick and roll. Kawhi Leonard  went under the screen, backing up to the paint and begging LeBron to shoot a jumper. It was what San Antonio had done all series and it had pretty much worked. But with 27 seconds left in game 7 of the NBA finals, LeBron took the jumper and put Miami up 92-88. 27 seconds and 3 made free throws later, the Heat had won their second title in as many years.

The western conference the Spurs won last year was a lot different than the one they will be playing in this season. Russell Westbrook was out for the playoffs, it was the Golden State team’s first playoffs, and Dwight hadn’t yet left the Lakers. The Western conference this year has a few very interesting teams in it all with a chance to reach the finals.

Golden State had a very intriguing playoff run last year. Without David Lee the Warriors elected to play Harrison Barnes at Power forward in crunch time. With that lineup, the Warriors got to within two games of the Western conference finals. The biggest question for this Warriors team coming into this season is who will play in crunch time and at what positions. It will likely be Harrison Barnes on the bench to start the season, but that could change as the year goes on. He is a much better defender than David Lee. Lee is a better pick and roll player than Barnes but Barnes’ range provides more spacing for Curry and Thompson to do their thing.  Mark Jackson will have to make a decision about what type of offense he wants to run down the stretch. Another option might be to deal one of the players but they both have 4 years on their contracts. Barnes is in his second year in the league and an asset that Golden State probably doesn’t want to deal. David Lee’s contract is huge and probably untradeable. This offseason the Warriors signed Andre Iguodala to a four year deal. Golden State’s offensive game last year was based around the spacing provided by having Curry, Thompson, Barnes, and Lee (and Jarrett Jack in the playoffs) on the floor together. All 5 of those players are good long range shooters. In the offseason Andre Iguodala was brought in for his defensive production. He will most likely be guarding players like Kobe, Parker, Durant, and Harden down the stretch in big games, but he is a poor shooter. Iguodala might destroy the balance of spacing that Golden State had last year. If this team can stay healthy and figure out its offense and rotation, it could be the best team in the west. Remember the David Lee Steph Curry pick and roll is the most dangerous in the league and it will hopefully be around for the playoffs this year.

Last year, the Oklahoma City Thunder was the favorite to come out of the western conference until Russel Westbrook got injured in their first round series against the Rockets. Unprepared for the loss of a teammate, there wasn’t a solid enough structure in the team to have a successful season, and they were easily defeated in the next round by Memphis. Though Westbrook is now healthy and in playing condition, he  is scheduled to miss the first six weeks of the season. With Kevin Martin departing to Minnesota, the Thunder are left with young players like Perry Jones, Reggie Jackson, and Jeremy Lamb as the only other scoring threats on the team besides Durant and Ibaka. The team will probably struggle until Westbrook returns, and may only win on nights when Kevin Durant scores 30. The injury will impact the Thunder’s playoff seeding, but it will not keep them from the playoffs. The bigger question down the line will be if the Thunder beat the top teams in the west in a playoff series, like they did in 2012, without James Harden.

The Spurs are the defending champions of the West. The big question surrounding the Spurs, and their continued success, is age. Greg Popovich has shown, over the years, an ability to manage the minutes of older players saving them for the playoffs with the team still earning  impressive playoff seeding. Another major question for the Spurs is Manu Ginobili’s play. In the last two rounds of the playoffs last year, he shot 39% from the field and only 30% from 3. He couldn’t create plays off the dribble or drive to the hoop the way he had in seasons past. If Manu really has gotten to the age where he can’t be a contributor for the spurs then other players will have to take his minutes and make plays for the offense. A step up for Kawhi Leonard would help to alleviate this problem. Kawhi has shown great defensive ability in his first two years NBA seasons. He is quickly becoming one of the top perimeter defenders in the league. His shooting and the plays off of the dribble are not the best, and with only a little improvement in the former point, he will probably be asked to take on a much bigger role in the Spurs offense than he did last year. Tony Parker’s season last year was given MVP consideration, he was the Spurs best player in the playoffs last season and he would have won finals MVP if the Spurs had won the finals. He will need to have a similar season for the Spurs to be contenders this year. Over the years the Spurs have been a team that consistently gets high seeding in the playoffs by staying steady and avoiding losing streaks. This coupled with the Thunder’s projected early season struggle makes them an early for the number one seed in the west.

Oversexualization of Women in Music

Music is one of the greatest, most common forms of expression, letting people display their emotions and thoughts on their everyday lives.  During the 1960’s the hippies expressed their thoughts on war and desire for world peace through music.  In the 1920’s music began to change, reflecting how humankind was starting to move on from the traditional values.  Now, women are constantly objectified in music and other mainstream media.  After all this misrepresentation some people still have the audacity to say there is equality between the genders!  If there was equality, women would not be degraded in the media as much as they are.

One song that is extremely shameful is “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke.  In the music video Robin Thicke is surrounded by practically naked women; he himself in a full suit.  He is portrayed as a “big strong man” while the girls in the video are not represented as humans, but as objects.  And if this isn’t disgusting enough, the song is about the so called “Blurred Lines” between yes and no.  Lines like “But you’re an animal, baby it’s in your nature,” “Just let me liberate you,” and “I know you want it” are intolerable.  This should not be in mainstream media, let alone any media!  These are not the values you want children to be exposed to.  It poisons their minds and destroys their character.  Everyone should know there are no blurred lines when it comes to consent!  Promoting rape culture is unacceptable and disgusting.  And to make it worse, in an interview at GQ Robin Thicke said, “What a pleasure it is to degrade women.”  Pleasures like this should not be in mainstream media; they make people think that things are just when they are very, very wrong.  To think that any man or woman could say such horrible things is repulsive and misogynistic.

Many music genres, such as Hip Hop often degrade women.  Some rappers and singers are constantly reducing women to nothing but objects which is unacceptable!  Many of the vocalists that do not degrade women are not as mainstream, so their voices go unheard by many.  People, such as impressionable children, may start to believe that bringing down women and harassing them is okay!

If women are going to be truly equal to men, then this has to stop.  Being portrayed less as people and more as objects is destroying women’s role in society.  “Women should be in the kitchen jokes” are suggesting that they are nothing but servants, designed to cater for others. Women are not less than men, and men are not less than women; they are equal.  If men (or women) believe that women are less, then they may begin to treat women harshly (e.g. harassment, abuse, etc.).

The oversexualization of women is getting out of hand in this day in age. Women have come so far in society and this is no time to take a step back.  Society as a whole has to fight against the demonization of women, and it is time for women around the world to speak up against patriarchy. Songs like that bring down all that we have worked for to have equality between the genders.  So I encourage you, dear reader, to act out against the inequality.

Why We Should Leave Miley Alone

No one could deny that Miley Cyrus has definitely had her fair share in the limelight these past months.  With the public wrapped around her fingertips, nothing she does goes unnoticed.  Some of her highly controversial performances include “Blurred Lines” alongside Robin Thicke at the 2013 VMAs, as well as the releases of her singles “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball”.  Without a doubt, the twenty year-old artist has suffered a great deal of hate.  But when it comes down to it, does Miley really deserve it all?

Many critics wonder where Hannah Montana went or wish for Miss Montana to come back.   People constantly ask, “Where’d Hannah go?” or “What happened to Hannah Montana?”.  Yes, the new Miley is a bit more spunky and bold than she was during her Disney Channel days.  But one must keep in mind that Miley started the show when she was just thirteen years old, barely a teenager, and that she will only be twenty-one next month.  Seven years is a long time- people change.  And the same is definitely true during those dramatic, memorable, and crazy teenage years.  Between the ages of thirteen and twenty, people grow up and find their true selves.  Their interests change and their personalities mature.  So to answer critics’ question, Hannah Montana simply grew up.  She won’t be back.  Everyone grows up and changes; the only difference is Miley’s changes have been documented worldwide on television and deeply analyzed by millions of people (and maybe are a teeny bit wild).

Not to argue that the “new” Miley is never inappropriate or always right, but we can’t blame her for becoming an adult and wanting to expand her horizons. It’s not uncommon for ex Disney-stars to go to drastic measures to try and to shed their “Disney Images”. We’ve witnessed this with Zac, Ashley, Selena, Demi, Vanessa, and Lindsay as well.  As stars become older, they want to take on new things and appeal to broader audiences.

Many critics also argue that Miley’s new image is inappropriate.  This may be true, but she does not deserve all that negativity for it.  Music is about expressing yourself.  In the song “Wrecking Ball,” Miley is expressing her true thoughts and feelings.  If you look past her two-dimensional image, you can see another dimension- the vivid emotions on her face.  She also claims she is trying to show her vulnerability through her attire. She was definitely vulnerable in her relationship with her ex fiancé, Liam Hemsworth, who cheated on her (which is what the song was written about).  Whether or not her image is to actually show vulnerability or is just another a marketing technique, it’s pop-culture.  One of the elements of pop culture is dressing funky and different, creating a memorable performance.  How different would Lady Gaga be without her unique outfits like her crazy meat or bubble wrap dresses?  No one will certainly forget that crazy mouse leotard Miley wore to the VMAs.  Wrecking Ball made history- breaking VEVO’s most viewed video in twenty-four hours at nineteen million, and on top of that, making #1 on the charts.

Miley has suffered a lot of unnecessary hate these past months.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and certainly does not need to agree with everything she does, but she does not deserve so much negativity for it.

In Defense of Electronic Dance Music

Everyone has their own tastes in music, but it’s important to know about a genre of music before having a solid opinion on it. Electronic dance music, affectionately termed EDM, has been an underground set of hundreds of genres for decades before surfacing.  The term EDM is now used to cover a list of several hundred genres and subgenres of electronic music, some of the most well known being trap (Bauuer – Harlem Shake), dubstep (Nero – Into the Past), drumstep (Pegboard Nerds – 20K), techno (Dog Blood – Next Order), moombah (Skrillex – Bangarang), and especially electro house (Ylvis – The Fox ).

Are you listening to music that has connections to EDM? Yes. No matter what genre(s) of music you listen to, every one has either influenced EDM or has been influenced by it. Without a doubt, you have heard Gangnam Style, the only music video with over one billion views. This song, and many other K-Pop tracks, is heavily influenced with its electro house roots. The largest company in Korean music, S.M. Entertainment, has created a group (S.M. The Performance) devoted solely to dancing to different genres of EDM. The company has realized that the electronic music industry is a great investment, and even offered the German producer Zedd several million dollars to gain rights to his electro house track, Spectrum.

Other examples between connections of EDM to other music include almost every single pop song using EDM instrumentals, and several artists influenced by electric guitar riffs. (e.g. Boys Noize –  Shred Sled) Savant has mixed in 8-bit Nintendo styled sounds, jazz, and baroque music with various genres of EDM to create a bravely unique style. Groups like Pendulum actually have a singer in them (Rob Swire), who sang the vocals for deadmau5 –  Ghosts n’ Stuff. Skrillex’s music was influenced by his days in the rock band “From First to Last.”

Zedd played a huge role in bringing EDM to the mainstream, as his newer songs (in Clarity LP) are more radio friendly than some of the other EDM tunes. Rap and Hip-hop have influenced the growing genre of “trap” which surfaced mainly because of just one song, Bauuer – Harlem Shake.

Though EDM is embedded in or contains elements of almost every other genre of music, not everyone has positive opinions on it. Many describe it as being “talentless” with no real instruments – made with the push of a few buttons. Others, though supportive of the genre, claim to be fans of only the most mainstream (Various Skrillex) EDM, which is a poor representation of the musical class as a whole. Even worse, some self-professed EDM fans will tell you “Skrillex is terrible noise; listen to some real electronic music.”

Each of these opinions really disappoints me for their own reasons. First of all, EDM is extremely difficult to produce.  Some artists work for a few years before finding their signature sound, only to later find out “it was getting old”, and that they would have to make a new one.

Secondly, EDM is not entirely Skrillex. Though he is with no doubt a talented producer, there are so many other great EDM artists out there; many of them have not yet surfaced.  Lemaitre, Savant, Mitis, Exige and Uppermost are only a tiny fraction of these talented underground artists.

Lastly, for the people that claim EDM to be “harsh noises,” most of EDM is not harsh, but the harsh sounding ones were the first to go mainstream (pre-Harlem Shake). If you realize this, but still have problems with Skrillex in particular, try listening to some of the older tracks he made under the names “Sonny Moore” or “Twipz” (Bells EP, Make Things for Smile, Follow Me (Cloud) etc.). In addition to these, there are three whole albums (LPs!) of material that Atlantic Records would not let him release, solely because his “dubstep” (not actually dubstep) was more popular.

Moore (Skrillex) initially had no intention of making music without his vocals in them. It wasn’t until his vocal surgery when he was forced to give up singing. If it were up to me, I’d rather have had Sonny’s solo singing career take off, not even letting Skrillex be born. Though I appreciate the EDM released under the name Skrillex, I feel that the works from his solo singing career are better in many ways (all of them also consisted of electronic instrumentals).

According to deadmau5 however, misunderstanding fans are only a part of the problems for EDM, and the bigger threat lies in pop music “watering down” EDM to the nonexistent genre it was twenty years ago. This however, I don’t agree with, since mainstream pop music using EDM instrumentals only makes EDM more well-known, actually helping it more than hurting it.

Whatever your opinion is on this category of music, or how you feel its future will be, EDM has, with no doubt, had a heavy impact on the music industry as a whole. Learn more about any genre of music before you make judgments.

Teen Fiction by… Teens?

Think about it; how many times have you noticed the author’s age of the young adult novel you’re reading? Most of the time, it will be an adult in his/her twenties or older. Most of us are probably reading popular books by authors well past their teenage years.

This doesn’t mean that older writers shouldn’t write teenage genres, but more that teenagers like ourselves should write more teenage novels. Just because you aren’t an adult yet doesn’t mean you can’t write. Over time, your writing will improve, but I think it’s better to write something now while you’re in this ‘teenager mindset’ rather than waiting until you’re forty years old and looking back, reflecting about your experiences in a different light. After all, the life of Clary Fray from City of Bones will never come true, and we do not have the same experiences or feelings she does, however sad this may make us.

Also, it’s not as if nobody has ever done it before. There are many examples of famous novels directed towards teens- which have also appealed towards adults- that were written by teens as well. S.E. Hinton, author of The Outsiders wrote this classic when she was in high school. Other examples?  Christopher Paolini, author of the Inheritance Cycle, and Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, author of In the Forests of the Night. In fact, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes was mentioned in a New York State English exam from some time in the past decade. Ah, the memories.

So, my point? Teenagers ought to give writing a try. I think that at this age if we write something targeted towards others our age, it will have the feelings we are feeling right now, instead of thinking of what we may have felt in twenty years. So give it a try, and when you take a break from your work tonight, try and see if you can put that story bubbling in your brain for the past two months into words.

The Thigh Gap

From runway models, to fashion trendsetters, to actresses, the thigh-gap has made it’s home on popular websites like Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter. The thigh gap is defined as a space between a girl’s inner thighs when she is standing with her feet together. The thigh gap has become an unhealthy inspiration for some, and led to eating disorders for others. But what is so enduring about the thigh gap? How was it so easy to make it an obsession?

The only way to answer that question is to look into the minds of young girls, who seem to be the ones that control the course in which trends follow. A recent study shows that eighty percent of girls dislike their bodies by the time they reach the age of seventeen years old. This eighty percent of girls are being affected by the advertisements and pictures constantly bombarding them. These pictures do not only show images of models, who people constantly look up to but understand that their body shapes are near unattainable. These pictures are of fashion trendsetters, and of actresses, who are supposed to be seen as relatable. But who is even more relatable than the picture-perfect actresses and reality stars that fill the screen? The teenage girls themselves. Images of regular girls— girls who don’t walk on the red carpet, but instead the girls who shop at Forever21, girls who wake up to go to school every morning—are shown sporting thigh gaps. These images normalize the obsession, and make it seem more attainable. What some girls do not even know is that the thigh gap is genetic. Sometimes being thin has absolutely nothing to do with whether you have a gap or not, it simply means your hips are wider set. Some who did not even know they wanted a thigh gap are suddenly obsessed.

What America sees as beauty changes drastically decade to decade. In the 1950s, a fuller figure was seen as beautiful, and now that seems so far and distant away. In fifty years time, maybe there will be a new obsession, and the thigh gap will disappear completely. The trend that hopefully comes soon is complete confidence in the body that you were given. Until then, eighty percent of girls will strive- unhealthily- to reach the infamous thigh gap.

DIY Movie-Inspired Costumes

As you all know, Halloween is at the end of the month and some of you are probably struggling to find a costume. So, here are some costume ideas that may assist you in your quest to find the perfect costume for you.

1. Katniss Everdeen:

I’m sure this has crossed many of your minds but if you’re thinking about going with that idea all you need is a leather jacket (preferably brown), boots, and of course a bow and arrow (preferably fake or else somebody will come after you).

2. Snow White and the Huntsman:

I’m not totally sure how popular this movie was but if you really want to be Snow White all you need is some armor, a shield, and a fake sword. It may cost  you but you’ll sure stick out.

3. Great Gatsby Flapper:

I mean if you weren’t already this for -ER day you still have a chance to make your teachers realize that you did actually listen to them in US History! All you need is a vintage 20s style dress, some kind of of headband or hat, big jewelry, some quality time with your makeup kit.

4. Shadowhunter:

Now this is a costume for guys and girls, but if you really have no clue what this is just skip to the next one. What you need for this costume is black clothing (if it’s leather then bonus points), fake weapons, and then draw runes on your arms and/or your neck depending on how far you want to go with it.

5. Abraham Lincoln:

Lincoln got double the love this year when his movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Killer came out and Lincoln. All you need for this costume is a nice suit, a top hat, a beard, and a fake axe depending on weather or not you go in that direction.

And if none of these work for you then you could always wear last year’s costume or buy one, or, I don’t know, be yourself (which can be pretty scary at times). But you are yourself everyday, so be creative and come in this October in a costume everyone will remember.

Tweet Tweet: Iranian Leader Talks to US

For the first time in 34 years, an Iranian president had a conversation with an American president. The minor phone call lasted 15 minutes, but symbolically ended years of international strife and conflict. In addition, he posted the conversation on twitter, a website just recently made legal in Iran. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has been seen as a reformer compared to his predecessors. He has offered to stop Iran’s nuclear program in return for an end to the crippling economic sanctions that have plagued Iran, and tweeted that solving the nuclear issue could help with other issues in the region, including Syria’s chemical weapons.

However, the new president has not been completely out of controversy.  When he landed in Tehran, protestors reportedly threw eggs and a shoe at him.

Collapse of Mumbai’s Babu Genu Market Building

In the early hours of the morning, a four-story residential building collapsed on the outskirts of Mumbai due to its dilapidated state, killing 60 people and injuring at least 33.

Owned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, or the BMC, it was declared “Class B2” last year- meaning that it was in dire need of repairs. It was discovered that alterations were made to the basement of the building that weakened the entire building’s structure. But nothing had been done to correct this. A tenant of the building, Ashok Mehta, was arrested for making illegal alterations in the building that eventually killed so many.

Before the collapse, the building contained 93 people in 28 single room homes. Then at 6 am on September 27th, all the windowpanes broke and without warning, the building caved in, trapping everyone inside.

“I was in the building when it fell,” says Deepteesh Kadam, “There was a small gap in the building so I escaped through the gap and came out. I got out but I could not find my brother at the time.” His brother was later found with just minor injuries. Their father and mother both died that day.

People are still waiting outside local hospitals for postings of those admitted to the hospitals, hoping it is a loved one. “They are still finding some people that have survived for so long,” a man says, “so I am still keeping hope.”

Many had come to the rescue, including six fire engines, four ambulances, 35 firemen, and a lot of policemen immediately after the accident occurred. Survivors are grateful to these brave men and women that helped save their lives.
