Top Five Fall TV Shows

Picture9By: Maureen Meosky

What does the season of fall mean to you? To some, it simply means the end of the summer, the segue from the warm to the cold. To others, it signifies the beginning of a new school year, the start of a new chapter in their life. Still to others, it means the beginning of their favorite sport’s season. Everyone has his or her own definition of it. But does anyone ever think of what’s on TV?

With all the new things swirling around your head in this particularly busy time of year, it’s easy to forget what shows you were meaning to pick up two months ago, in the dead of summer, when you had nothing to keep you from following all of your favorite shows religiously. Because of this, I have compiled all of the most promising TV shows right here in hopes that I have made someone’s endeavor to fill up a rainy Saturday just a little bit easier. So, here are (in my opinion) the best shows to watch this fall:

  1. Modern Family

It goes without saying that at least one mockumentary was essential to this list. With an incredibly diverse set of characters, Modern Family gives an inside look on a set of three different immediate families that you would never think at first glance were all related to each other. In all aspects, Modern Family gives the typical “nuclear family” show a run for its money. Plus, who doesn’t love Sofía Vergara?

  1. The Voice

The Voice. Or, as I like to call it, American Idol, but Better. Why? The Voice, in my opinion, outshines all other musical competition shows because of the sheer uniqueness of its format. While most competition shows have the traditional three or four judges who critique each contestant after a performance, the “judges” in The Voice do so much more. First of all, there aren’t really judges in The Voice at all – there are mentors. And with each celebrity mentor building his or her own individual team of contestants, The Voice brings the world of singing competition shows to a whole new level.

  1. The Walking Dead

ZOMBIES, am I right? Ok, I have to confess I don’t know all that much about this show, but I have a brother who does (let’s call him “Joe” for confidentiality reasons), and when he starts watching it, he can’t look away. I included The Walking Dead in this article because, although it’s not aimed at every audience, the audience it is aimed at is never dissatisfied. So, if you like blood, gore, and incredibly realistic-looking scenes of corpses tearing apart people, and, sometimes, other corpses(!), The Walking Dead is the show for you!

  1. Scorpion

Isn’t it annoying how many shows there are about a group of four geniuses solving top-secret FBI cases that no one else can crack? Of course not! Because Scorpion’s the only one! Based on the life of real-life genius Walter O’Brien, Scorpion brings a whole new twist to the crime-solving genre. In addition, it’s often even more intense than your typical, run-of-the-mill crime investigation show because, with geniuses as the main characters, the show needs to have a plot that isn’t too easy for them to keep up with. So, basically, take your normal crime show and multiply it by six. Isn’t that what we all need?

New Fossils Human Kin

178_sediba_300By: Sarah Wie

After a treacherous journey through the caves at the Cradle of Humankind Heritage Site in South Africa, scientists and paleoanthropologists found fossil fragments of an ancestor to the human species. Lee Berger, an American paleoanthropologist, announced on September 10 after two years of analysis with fifty international experts, that the fossil fragments are what remain from the new species of human relative, now named Homo naledi (“many stars”). Berger is a researcher in human evolution at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg (Williamsville students–this is the university that always pops up when you Google “WITS”!).

The scientists have stated that these fossils could be one of the first members of the genus Homo. There were at least fifteen individuals of these species within the fossil fragments, are placed in the same area of the cave, which might mean that these species practiced a ritual for their deceased. Berger remarked, “It’s enormously surprising to see a very primitive member of the genus, not very humanlike overall, to do something unique to humans. To see it in a small-brained hominid is completely surprising.”

The physical morphology of the hominid indicates that its brain was about the size of a baseball, and its fingers were long–suitable for swinging from trees. The primitive aspects of this species further supports the assertion that these species could be the first of the Homo genus. Berger claims that H. naledi “comes near or at the root of the genus Homo,” which circles back to about 2.5 million years ago. Berger and the team continues to excavate the caves for further analysis, with a quip: “This chamber has not given up all its secrets.”

Global Warming and Killer Mosquitos

Global warming is a recognized issue that is known to have detrimental effects on the environment. Despite the efforts of humans to control global warming, the temperature of the earth is still increasing at an alarming rate. Due to this worldwide crisis, there have been severe consequences such as increased coastal flooding, melting glaciers, and long-term damage to marine animals. As if it couldn’t get any worse, recent studies have shown that global warming is causing a new and deadly phenomenon: killer mosquitoes.

The average mosquito may seem puny and harmless, but when grouped in enormous swarms, the mosquito has a much more threatening appearance. In fact, mosquito swarms may contain over one million individual insects, all with the intent to feast on flesh. These bloodthirsty groups of mosquitoes are particularly destructive to caribou, who are completely defenseless against the vicious insects. According to The Atlantic’s Ross Anderson, “[Mosquito swarms] are enough to harass a pregnant caribou until she stops worrying about food. And it’s enough to kill caribou calves outright.” Evidence also shows that even mature adults can be harmed by the brutal insects. Since killer mosquitoes are causing a decrease in the population of caribou, they are also indirectly affecting other organisms as the whole entire ecosystem is disrupted.

If the temperature of the earth continues to increase, the killer mosquitoes will become more rampant than ever. This is because warming causes mosquitoes to hatch ahead of schedule as well as an increased development rate of immature mosquitoes. Faster development and fewer days exposed to predators only means that more mosquitoes will survive into the adult stage and join the clouds of blood-sucking insects. This is bad news for the caribou, and ultimately bad news for the numerous organisms that depend on the caribou for survival. To care for the survival of these organisms, global warming must cease. If not, then killer mosquitoes could potentially turn the whole world into a terrible nightmare.

Refugee Crisis Rocks Globe

Picture7By: Harleen Kaur

Today, over halfa million people have arrived in Europe after being displaced from their homes due to war and oppression. While many of these refugees head to Europe, the numbers are drastically increasing and the number of people allowed into European countries is not following. An estimated 8,000 people are allowed into Europe every day, and the number has been said to have leveled off.

Many of these refugees come from Syria, where a civil war is occurring, and some say that if the civil war does not end soon Europe will be unable to contain all the refugees. Also, it has been reported that by the end of this year about 10 million Iraqis will be in need of humanitarian support. 3.2 million have already been displaced. And as relations between Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia deteriorate due to trade wars more and more refugees have been displaced throughout Europe. Thus, refugee quotas were put into action in order to move refugees to countries based on population, GDP, unemployment, and previous asylum applications. Because many of the refugees are currently largely in Greece and Italy, leaders have been trying to move them to countries such as Germany with little success. Europe also now has to scramble in order to recognize sovereignty, quotas, border control, and cultural identity due to the facts that over ninety percent of the refugees who arrive in Europe arrived on smuggler boats crossing the Mediterranean or Aegean Sea.

After Hungary closed its borders to Serbia by finishing their razor- wire fence on September 15 Croatia has allowed refugees to enter the country. Although, this seemed victory ended shortly when the country became overwhelmed, and leaders began trying to move refugees into countries such as Slovenia and Hungary who had already taken measures to keep them out.

Overall, progress has been slow on how to accommodate the millions of the refugees coming from Asia, Europe, and Africa. Central and eastern Europe have been resisting forced quotas and border checks have been enacted in Germany, Austria, and Slovakia thus suspending the EU’s Schengen zone. Although, the issue is difficult it is obviously escalating, and Western and Eastern Europe must come to an agreement in order to provide a true solution.

Deadly Flash Flood in Utah

Picture6By: Nicole Kazmerzack

On September 14th, one of the worst floods in Utah’s history took place, amounting to at least 20 fatalities so far. Almost instantly, innocent lives were swept away by the rigorous mudslides and floodwaters.

Seven people set out to hike in Zion National Park that day, despite the warnings that flash floods were probable in the area. The park rangers warned that they would be better off not going, but since at the time there was not yet an official warning from the National Weather Service, it was legal for them to go on the trek. Sadly, all seven would be swept away as the canyon they were hiking in swelled with water.

Several vehicles were also washed away by the rapidly moving floodwaters, all filled with families whose lives were taken as well. The flood has shaken up the community as it has changed and stole the lives of many. Almost instantly, lives were transformed as the powerful flood swept victims away.

There will be a memorial open to the public for the people whose lives were taken so suddenly.

Wealth is an Undue Influence in Elections

When one thinks of America, perhaps they think of the freedom and democracy that this country was founded upon (supposedly). Americans have always prided themselves upon the principles of equality and justice that they believe government to operate by. However, it is becoming more and more apparent that this may not always be the case (in more ways than one); this being no exception when examining the tactics used by certain candidates, corporations, and economic elites in the upcoming election.

For a long time, powerful corporations and wealthy individuals have had an overwhelming influence in the American electoral process. However, with the victory of the Citizens United case in the Supreme Court in 2010, corporations won the ability to spend unlimited sums of money in support of candidates who will represent their interests if elected. In a 5-4 ruling, it was decided unconstitutional that the government restrict corporations from spending on elections, greatly changing the amounts they are able to contribute and ultimately giving ruthless corporations the same rights as individual Americans. After its introduction, former President Jimmy Carter voiced the worrisome criticism, “Now America is just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nomination for president. We’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election is over.”

As the influence of these corporations increase, America is beginning to see a pattern of the rich getting richer at the expense of the middle class. Through corporations’ tax evasion, outsourcing to low wage countries, lobbying, aggressive anti-union campaigns, share manipulation, funding of politicians, scandals, and more, the middle class is gradually declining, causing the gap between the rich and poor to widen. “Whether it is Wall Street, the oil companies, the coal companies, the insurance companies, the drug companies, the military-industrial complex; all of these very powerful and wealthy special interests contribute huge amounts of money into the political process, making it harder and harder for the significant needs of working families to be heard outside the power of big money,” expressed Vermont senator and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

This upcoming election is certainly no exception to these dirty practices. This is no secret if you examine the major donors of each candidate. Six out of ten of Hillary Clinton’s donations come from banks. Her large donor contributions amount to an astounding $38,840,036 as of August 2015, and millions more from other Super PACs. Jeb Bush’s top contributors include insurance companies, banks, and other large corporations, and has raised $103,000,000 from just 9,900 different donors, as of July. The list goes on.

What exactly does all this mean for the average American? Aside from longer hours and less pay, a shocking study done by political science professors Martin Gilens of Princeton University and Benjamin Page of Northwestern University found that ordinary Americans have virtually no impact on national policies; a “non significant, near-zero level”. Instead, they discovered that America, the quintessential democracy, is controlled significantly by rich individuals and business controlled interest groups. By lobbying and making donations, representatives of a company meet senators and other politicians to inform them about the goals of their industry, convincing officials to make decisions in favor of the company or expecting them to once they get in office.

The study also disproves the idea that the policy interests of the rich and corporations align with the views of common citizens, finding that they actually sharply diverge and that these economic elites almost always win while the ordinary Americans lose.

So, what exactly can ordinary Americans do to fight against this corruption? It is extremely important that the middle and lower class vote! Studies have shown that more affluent Americans vote in a much higher proportion than the less affluent, and that the electoral turnout is highly correlated with economic standing. Make sure to inform yourself about each candidate, their tactics, history, views, policies, and who exactly they’re representing. Another reason for the dominance of the wealthy and corporations is the decreasing participation of ordinary citizens in grassroots movements in recent decades. It is important to support and raise awareness about these movements because often times, if a large enough number of Americans protest and demand change, politicians are pressured to address these issues, which at the very least can spark important conversation. Although PACs and super-PACs are able to donate huge sums of money, if more Americans contribute modest sums, common interests can be represented. For the future of this country, its inhabitants, and democracy, it is imperative that we do not ignore this injustice.

NASA Develops Magnetic Microsatellites

NASA_logo.svgBy: Garrett Speller

Manipulation of small objects in space has always been a tough nut to crack for the engineers at NASA. Current space suits are extremely cumbersome because they have to protect the astronauts from just about everything, including radiation, searing heat, cold that could cause your fingers to crack off, and then there’s space debris.  So the gloves alone are bulky and do not bend well, plus tactile sensitivity is pretty much nil.  With the hopes of solving this dilemma, NASA has recently partnered with Arx Pax, a research and development corporation, to get a toe hold on its patented magnetic field architecture technology. In theory, this technology would allow astronauts (and mission control) to manipulate micro-satellites without touching them.    This would be done through the utilization of magnet tethers (the same technology that is behind the hover board kickstarted earlier this month). The microsatellites, called CubeSats, use magnetic tethers to assemble and form larger objects. The cubes come in a 10 X 10 format, and they are currently being used for demos in space. These demos are good for scaling up, says Alex Saunders, a student currently working with the prototype cubes. “A tech firm will reach out to CubeSat researchers to test prototypes of their products in space, they’ll put them on a CubeSat, and we’ll get data back to them, so then they can say that their products were tested in space” Another application of the CubeSats technology would be the new ExoCubes that Saunders and his team developed in Cal Poly that measure ions and neutrals in the atmosphere. This is just one of many potential applications of this technology, which NASA estimates will be in use in the next couple of years. Saunders again:  “We are currently developing a number of prototypes over the next one to two years, and will be exploring alternative designs with this technology.”

Why You Should Hate Bernie Sanders

1

Picture5By: Ananya Murthy

Bernie Sanders: the man who stars in every Republican’s nightmares. He’s a socialist, has extremely liberal policies, fights for the middle and lower class, and worst of all, he’s Jewish. How could Americans ever support a candidate like that? Where are the wealthy Christian candidates with family values and a drive to “make America great again”? Oh right, that’s the entire Republican party, which includes fan favorites like Donald Trump, the billionaire son of a KKK member, and Ben Carson, who still believes that “being gay is a choice” and that “Obamacare is the worst thing to happen to America since slavery”. That’s reassuring!

Sanders is the ultimate liberal – he aims for complete racial, gender, religious, and sexual equality, in addition to diminishing the wealth gap between the upper and lower classes. Sanders argues for increasing minimum wage and raising taxes for the rich. He even pushes for decreased college tuition and increased aid, so education is more readily available to all Americans. Sanders’ campaign looks to improve the lives of all Americans, on all fronts.

Sanders’ campaign itself is more oriented towards helping those who need it the most, compared to other candidates’ campaigns whose interests lie elsewhere. He doesn’t involve himself with lobbyists and Super PACs and the like; rather, most of his donations come from average Americans in hopes to fight against injustice and help those who are struggling, instead of those who are already rich and powerful. He refuses to be swayed by lobbyists or corporations. While other candidates are spending millions on campaigning – millions that could be used for actually helping the American people – Sanders only takes what people are willing, or able, to give. Sanders has a truly incredible and unmatched dedication to the American people and fighting against the corruption and injustices of this country. Sanders also takes the input of people attending his speeches, rather than ignoring all of his opponents. When people from the #BlackLivesMatter movement protested his lack of attention to the movements for racial equality, he took it upon himself to bring in a member of their group as an advisor for his campaign, and began to speak out more about racial inequality.

Bernie Sanders: a man who fights for equality, and cares about the American people. What a nightmare.

We Need More Religious Representation in Congress

1

Picture4

By: Wladimir Sarmiento

I have a radical idea: I believe that the government of the United States as a representative democracy has an obligation to represent the American people and their often differing views on a wide gamut of issues, including those that are controversial or social taboos.

While this sounds fairly reasonable, the opinions expressed in this article, in which I will attempt to prove that this ideal has not been reached in the United States of America, will almost certainly make me an unelectable candidate to more than half of voters if I should ever decide to seek political office in this country. This is because the topic of this article is one that is near and dear to many American’s hearts, and that I believe is corrupting the electoral process of this nation: religion.

Our country’s government has always been dominated by people with religious beliefs, as evidenced by a Pew Research Poll this year on the 114th Congress showing that 91.8 percent of members identify themselves as Christians, with only one member lacking religious affiliation.

The problem is that Christians constitute an ever decreasing percentage of the actual US population while numbers of Americans who do not associate with any religion are significantly rising. The same Pew Research Poll shows that only 73 percent of American adults actually identify as Christian, and the percentage of adults that do not associate with any religion has risen from 16.1 to 22.8 percent since 2007. This means that the Congress of this country no longer represents a fifth of the nation in terms of issues pertaining to religion and the teachings of the church.

For better or for worse, religion affects public policy just as much as rich campaign donors and political parties ever will. The debates currently going on about issues like same-sex marriage and the ethics of Planned Parenthood clinics, for example, are inarguably based on differing religious views on both sides. Anyone who disagrees with this is either lying, or worse, vying for a Republican primary nomination.

This is why it is so harmful that there exists a social stigma in this country against openly declaring oneself as lacking religious affiliation (a declaration often interpreted as an admission of being that terrible word, often grouped into the same hateful category as child molesters and murderers: atheist… I shiver at its very mention). Sure, adults are more than willing to do so in the anonymity provided by nationwide polls such as the aforementioned Pew Research ones. But in the inherently public process of running for office, candidates are often pressured into either lying about their religious views or not running at all if they deviate from the established norm. As I alluded in my introduction, a recent Pew study found that over half of Americans say they would not vote for an atheist president; a fact which no doubt deters non-religious candidates from expressing their views truthfully.

So I call for the more-than-one-fifth of you who are reading this article and have no religious affiliation to consider the following the next time you are contemplating voting for a political candidate: Do you want your views to be considered in the government when arbitrating important social issues? If so, it would be wise to put your votes in the few candidates who are brave enough to declare their lack of religious belief, for only then will this country be able to achieve a more accurate representation of its people.

‘Tis Hatched and East shall go to Stratford

Picture3By: Leena Sen

For all of you Shakespeare fans out there, it’s time for the Stratford Trip this year!  Over the years, students have had the opportunity to go to Stratford, Ontario to see a Shakespeare play during the Stratford festival.  The day-long trip is a favorite of all East students, with Mrs. Catalano and Mr. Hurley joining the fun each year.  This year the Stratford trip will be on October 8th, and students will be able to see The Taming of the Shrew, a Shakespearean comedy. If you are interested in going, there may still be a few tickets left– you can check with Mrs. Catalano for more information.

The itinerary of the Stratford trip involves leaving at 8 in the morning and arriving back around 9pm.  During the trip, students get to take a look around the town of Stratford to see shops and eat lunch, see the play, and have a great time with friends on the trip there and back.  The trip is an opportunity to see plays performed at an internationally recognized annual celebration of theatre and Shakespeare.

For those of you going to the Stratford festival this year, enjoy The Taming of the Shrew and another year of Shakespeare!
