Sometimes life really stinks, but what is there to do when that happens? Just let yourself implode with self loathing? Well that may seem like the easiest thing to do it is not healthy. Struggling depression is not something to be ashamed about and it is something that can be treated. Mentalhealth.gov states that “Depression is a disorder of the brain. There are a variety of causes, including genetic, environmental, psychological, and biochemical factors.” So you may think you are going crazy (who isn’t)but it’s not your personality that needs a boost, but the serotonin in your brain.
Anxiety is another major mental health problem taking over the teens of our generation. Anxiety disorders come in all different shapes and sizes. Disorders range from OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) to panic disorder. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a type of anxiety disorder. If you have OCD, you have repeated, upsetting thoughts called obsessions. Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder. It causes panic attacks, which are sudden feelings of terror for no reason. Even though these feelings can be very unsettling, there are self-help exercises you can do to help calm down.
For example you can self soothe, which when you are in the moment can be hard but using one or more of your five senses can help move your mind away from what if triggering. When something is upsetting, people tend to dwell on it until it is the only thing they can actually think about, it slowly consumes you. Instead of letting yourself fall into the pile of despair, why not lift yourself up and do a little happy dance! If happy dancing isn’t your thing there are many other things you can do, such as Opposite Action. When you are upset do you really feel like doing anything? Personally when I get upset I enjoy doing nothing at all, but who is that helping? Instead of doing the thing that you would normally do, like moping around, clean something, distract yourself from what is bothering you and revisit the situation when you are able.
One more thing, mental health is not something to tip-toe around, it is a serious matter and if you or anyone around you is struggling I wish you the best of luck and I hope you get what you need. You are a strong person and you deserve the very best in life and that is the truth. As I said in the beginning, life can really stink. Keep your head held high and never give up.
