The new FOX horror comedy, Scream Queens, starring Emma Roberts, comes just in time for Halloween, with a plot of a Sorority House serial killer on the loose. The show begins in Kappa Sorority at Wallace University. The first scene, a party in the house, set in the 90’s with all its denim glory, sets the tone of the show. While most of the Kappa girls party downstairs, two sit in the bathroom, alone and panicked.

Not to give anything away, but by the dialogue and the turn of events and how the characters react to it, it’s already kind of obvious what kind of show this is. You know the Scary Movie series that pokes fun at all the recent horror blockbuster hits? It’s kind of like that, but the show is making fun of itself.

On social media, it’s being reviewed as funny, but the kind of funny when a show knows it’s not exactly quality, thought provoking TV and is able to recognize that in an entertaining way and still keep the audience interested. In my opinion, it was funny.

But something bad happens that night in the bathroom, and it just might finally be coming back to bite Kappa House and maybe teach its girls a life lesson or two. Chanel, the main character and head of Kappa House after the time jump forward to 2015, portrayed by Emma Roberts, is snotty, rich, well dressed, and everything a stereotypical 90’s movie sorority head might be. Chanel and her minions (named Chanel numbers two through six) give off a very Heather Chandler or Regina George vibe. She’s mean, but her insults are quick-witted and taken by her “subordinates” as valuable life advice. Grace, another character introduced in the pilot, played by Skyler Samuels, is pretty much Chanel’s polar opposite. She’s sweet, and quickly becomes acquainted with Chanel, and Chanel’s attitude, and right away she doesn’t like her. She sticks with her though, because she wants to be in Kappa Sorority and Chanel has the power to make that call.

When things take a dramatic, and honestly ridiculous, turn for the worse, and Kappa beings to have a body count, Grace plots to take Chanel down and restore Kappa to what it used to be, before it became corrupt with people like Chanel in charge. Scream Queens has a little something for everyone. It’s got a likeable protagonist, another more problematic but still potentially likable protagonist, humor, a well-known and loved cast, mystery, and really on point clothing.

Even its supporting characters were funny and had something familiar about them- every single one! However, it was more graphic than I was expecting. Someone literally gets their face burned off in the first episode, and that’s not the only death or gore in the episode. It wasn’t too gruesome, but if you’re really, really squeamish, you might consider staying away from Scream Queens. Scream Queens airs on FOX, Tuesdays at 9/8c.
