China Experiences Deadly Explosions

This summer, places all over the world were rocked by disastrous events.  China faced two, and they were not too far from one another.

In August, two deadly explosions occurred in Tianjin and the eastern province of Shandong.  The explosions both occurred at chemical plants, the explosion in Shandong occurring just two weeks after the Tianjin blasts.

In Tianjin, two major explosions killed over one hundred, leaving hundreds of others injured.  The blasts devastated major areas of the city.  It is unclear what triggered the blasts; they occurred at a warehouse which contained flammable chemicals like calcium carbide, sodium cyanide, potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, and sodium nitrate.  Preceding the explosions at Tianjin, firefighters sprayed water to control the fire.  It is possible that this triggered the blasts, as calcium carbide, which was present at the site, reacts with water to produce highly explosive acetylene.  This explosion may have lead to a chain of other blasts from other chemicals.

The first explosion had the power equivalent to three tonnes of TNT detonating, and the second blast was equivalent to 21 tonnes. It was so powerful that Earth’s satellites in orbit were able to capture the second explosion.

While the impact on the land and port were significant, reaching into residential areas, the impact on the environment and people was immense.  720 were taken to the hospital, over 60 critically injured.  The final death toll has come to 173, and the search for survivors has ended.  The remaining 8 missing (five of whom are firefighters) have been declared dead. China’s citizens also face potential health hazards following the Tianjin explosions, as sodium cyanide, which was present at the site, is “rapidly fatal” if inhaled or ingested.  It is also water soluble, which raised concerns that it may have gone into drain water.  Another potential hazard is sodium cyanide;  when dissolved or burned, sodium cyanide releases hydrogen cyanide, a highly poisonous gas.  A number of other chemicals pose potential health concerns as well.
The second deadly chemical blast occurred in Shandong province.  The death toll is at 13.  Shandong province is about 190 miles from Tianjin (300 kilometers).  The Shandong explosion caused tremors up to 1 mile away from the scene, and it destroyed a factory that produced adiponitrile, a colorless liquid that produces poisonous fumes and gases when reacted with fire.

The Shandong and Tianjin explosions have raised questions about the safety standards in China, where such industrial accidents are much too common and cause disastrous destruction despite its rapid economic growth.

The Refugee Crisis: How it’s Affecting the Entire World

0

SyriaBy: Leena Sen

Since 2011, the raging war in Syria has led 10.6 million people to flee their homes. Today, one in five displaced people in the world is Syrian.  Following the rise of ISIS, the number of refugees has only climbed.

Most Syrians who left their homes registered as refugees with the United Nations when they left Syria.  A majority of refugees are moving to countries closeby, particularly Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.  Many are also going to Europe to seek asylum– a status in which they can work and live legally in another country.

Three in five Syrians seeking asylum in Europe are in Sweden, Serbia, or Germany.  Large numbers are also seeking lives in Hungary, Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark and the Netherlands.  The United States is also settling Syrian refugees; 1500 have been settled since 2011, 1199 of whom were settled in the US this fiscal year, which ends September 30th.  President Obama has ordered his administration to increase this number to at least 10000 refugees in the next fiscal year.

However, not all countries are being very welcoming to the Syrian refugees.  Recently, Hungary has gained attention for its attitude towards the migrants.  Human Rights Watch’s emergency director remarked that the refugees were being held as if they were “cattle in pens”. Migrants have been kept in “abysmal” conditions, lacking food and medical care.  Images released by Human Rights Watch may fuel allegations that Hungary is not meeting the minimum standards for the treatment of migrants.  Hungary has become a sort of bottleneck in the route for refugees, as many refugees go through Hungary to reach Germany.  The lack of transportation is limiting the number that can travel at a time.

The Central European states have rejected the plan for a quota system limiting the number of migrants (people who have not yet completed the legal process of claiming asylum).

As the refugee crisis continues, a generation of children faces a life where many cannot go to school due to the conditions in Syria.  Thousands of people have lost their lives, and most recently, a small child and his family who drowned washed up on a beach in Turkey. They were trying to reach Canada, but their boat capsized, killing them.  The refugee crisis continues as a reminder of the devastation occurring in war-torn Syria and the troubles refugees and migrants face as they are forced to transition into new lives in other countries.

Global Warming and its Drastic Effect on Polar Bears

BearBy Sarah Wie

Photos of emaciated polar bears have affirmed the increasingly dramatic climate changes resulting from global warming. A National Geographic photographer, Paul Nicklen, travelled to the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard in search of polar bears. However, the only two bears Nicklen found were starved to death.

“These bears were so skinny, they appeared to have died of starvation, as in the absence of sea ice, they were not able to hunt seals,” he wrote in the caption accompanying the photograph. Nicklen, a scientist at the University of Alberta, concluded that the bear had starved to death.

Kerstin Langenberger took another snapshot of a particularly emaciated polar bear, trudging along a shrinking piece of ice. It was only one of several gaunt female polar bears that Langenberger had discovered during her trip to Svalbard.

The population of polar bears has plummeted in recent decades, most likely as a result of global warming, but it is impossible to find a direct cause as the primary locations of these bears are in remote areas. The loss of sea ice, however, has a direct harmful impact on these bears’ wellbeing.

Kim Davis is Back to Work

DavisBy: Harman Kaur

June 26, 2015 is a date that will be celebrated by every same sex couple in the United States. On that date, the Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges that states banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. While there were protests against it, they were overshadowed by the mass celebration that spread across America. Only there was one act of defiance that continued, still continues, to dominate the news when it comes to the new legislature. Kim Davis.

Kim Davis is one of the highest profile county clerks in the United States and it is because of her defiance to hand out marriage licenses to couples of the same sex. Why does she refuse to hand out marriage licenses? Davis continues to say that the idea is against her faith and belief system. On September 3rd, U.S. District Judge David Bunning had enough, ordering Kim Davis to be arrested for contempt of court. The very next day Rowan County witnessed its first same-sex marriage. But even from a jail cell Kim Davis rejected the license, telling her lawyer that it was not valid since she had not signed or approved it.

Kim Davis returned to work in tears on Monday, September 14th after a five day sentence in jail. Although she went back to work, she stayed out of sight for the most part and did not try to stop her deputies from handing out marriage licenses–choosing not to hand them out herself. She did say that she did not consider these licenses valid either due to the fact that she had not signed them and they had been altered to remove her name. Worrying couples about the legitimacy, they turned to the federal government for which Judge Bunning said the altered licenses would be accepted even if he was not sure about the legitimacy of them. Kentucky’s governor, Steve Beshear, said that the licenses were legal and valid no matter of Davis’s signature being on the licenses or not.

With all this chaos in Rowan County, Kentucky has a long battle to go when it comes to Kim Davis. Anti-Gay supporters are supporting Davis in her wishes for the Supreme Court and States to create a loophole for clerks whose religious beliefs do not agree with the Court’s decision and give them an out in handing out licenses. LGBTQ supporters are hoping that Davis will either start doing her job or simply just resign. This is not going to be a simple fix for both parties but we are hoping for a happy ending for all couples, homosexuels and heterosexuals.

First GOP Republican Debate

Debate1By: Harleen Kaur

This summer the GOP Republican Debates took place on August 6th on Fox News. It received the largest, most attentive opening day, receiving 24 million viewers, in American politics, and that was all due in part to one person–Donald Trump. And while Fox news pounded hard on Trump the other candidates proved to be given difficult questions as well. Overall, the candidates rose to the occasion, but there were many clear losers and winners.

Everyone can agree that the debate ultimately went to Trump who dominated the discussion, was the clear focus of the moderators, and of social media. As the frontrunner of the of the Republican Party it isn’t very clear whether or not Trump hurt himself or helped himself that night. Although, he remains at the front of the polls and the other candidates seems happy with just being included.

The clear winner of the debate was Florida senator, Marco Rubio. The youngest on stage that night, Rubio seemed to be the most comfortable and prepared to appeal to the audience. His life story of being a child of Cuban immigrants was both relatable and appealing to those looking towards the American dream. After a few rough months Rubio became a candidate that could seriously be looking at the win.

The biggest disappointment of the night had to be Jeb Bush who was terribly unappealing. He seemed nervous and was overall uninspiring, and in a debate where the main goal is to provide motivation to the voters Bush came out to be a clear loser.

Both Rand Paul and Chris Christie came out of the debate with memorable names after their heated debated on government surveillance. Christie also took the stage when discussing entitlements. Overall, Christie had a good, not great, night while the debate on surveillance could be seen as Paul’s only high point.

Both Carly Fiorina and John Kasich were able to get a few good lines in about the opposing candidates allowing them to be put on the list of winners. Fiorina was able to get in a few good points against Bush and Trump, while Kasich used the low performance of Walker to his advantage. He was confident and reasonable, and had an overall good night. Both showed improvements in the polls following the debate.

Scott Walker proved to be just okay providing answers that were just adequate but confident. Huckabee seemed to be in the same category, but overall unmemorable. And the candidate with the biggest potential of the night had to be Ben Carson. He gave confident and appealing answers, but if he had had more airtime he may have been more memorable.

Overall, many candidates gave surprising arguments, but there were many clear losers and winners. There is still a race accounting for that fact that the elections are still over a year away.

Cryonic: The Future of Immortality?

18c6wfrpey00zjpgBy: Sarah Wie

As Kim Suozzi took her last ragged breath after succumbing to her virulent brain cancer,  her boyfriend Josh Schisler knew he had only minutes to alert the cryonics teams to one day rejuvenate her mind. Suozzi hoped her rain could be preserved in subzero storage, so that when the neurobiology technology becomes advanced enough in the future, her intertwined neurons could be converted into a computer code that resembles the once sentient mind.

Suozzi was originally diagnosed with a benign form of cancer, but soon learned that the tumor was glioblastoma, an incurable form of cancer. As she carried through with chemotherapy, she came across an intriguing article: “The Brain Preservation Technology Prize: A challenge to cryonicists, a challenge to scientists,” which claimed that if the brain could be preserved, immortality would just on the horizon.

Her MRI, a few months after beginning treatment, showed that an experimental drug did not stop the growth of the tumor, and she and Josh began using social media outlets to gain recognition and collect funds for donation to cryonics.

As Suozzi dove further into the blooming field of cryonics, she learned that the molecular properties of neurons signified which neurons should be connected where, and even the damaged neurons could be put together once more digitally. She told Josh, “You’ll have to enhance me,” referring to the theoretical point in the future with her resurrected brain. Dr. Fahy, a cryobiologist who focuses on organ banking, gave Suozzi hope when he concluded that cryonics preserved brain structure through an experiment: after slices of rabbit brains were cooled to cryogenic temperatures and then rewarmed, they reacted to electrical stimulation.

The procedure to freeze her brain when smoothly, though the cryoprotectant had only covered the outer part of her brain, making the rest subject to ice damage. Josh was comforted by the fact that the conserved outer part of her brain, responsible for abstract thinking and language, may still be able to respond to the messages he wrote from time to time for Kim. In memory of Kim, Josh stated “Until (or unless) the day comes that Kim can be brought back, remember her, celebrate her, and emulate her resilience, so we can create the future of her dreams.”

Annual Ice Cream Social Kicks Off Another Year

This year’s Ice Cream Social was a massive success!  Members of all four classes gathered outside to enjoy the delicious event, which was hosted by the Student Council. The event started directly after school on Friday, September 11th.  This year displayed a more streamlined system with more lines to dispense ice cream (but still the same gigantic crowds).  Toppings included M&Ms, sprinkles, and whipped cream.

For the freshman who are new to the school, the student council who ran this event are as follows.  They are incredibly helpful people who you can always ask for help!

The President is Trisha Pickelhaupt, who also happens to be a member of the Newspaper club. The Vice President is Brian Morreale, the Secretary Laura Zu, and the Treasurer is Alanna Kramer.  They run multiple events throughout the year, including this and the Valentine’s day flowers event.  Don’t worry if you missed out.  There’s always next year!

East Embraces a New Phone Policy

0

PhoneBy: Gillian Marcus

As most students are already eagerly aware of, East recently adopted an entirely new policy in regards to cell phones.  Previously, students were not allowed to use their phones during the school day unless instructed to do so by teachers, but now, they’re allowed to use them during passing time, in a free period, and in the library for educational purposes.  On top of being able to use their cellular devices, headphones are also permitted.  While this all may seem like an extreme blessing, there are rules that accompany it.

One rule is that, when using headphones, only one ear bud should be in, and the audio must be low so as not to disturb others.  Monitors have the right to confiscate the headphones of students who choose to disobey this rule.  Another issue is taking pictures or video during the school day.  Every student has the right to learn in an atmosphere free of disruptions, and their privacy is of great concern to the staff at East, especially since cyber bullying goes hand-in-hand with this rule.  Overall, it’s in the best interest of students to try not to use Snapchat or take pictures/videos to respect the privacy of other people.

Phones also aren’t allowed to be used in locker rooms or bathrooms for obvious reasons.  Any pictures taken there will also be a serious violation of privacy.

Most students support this new change.  When asked what she thinks of the new phone policy, junior Saaim Ali says, “I think it’s a great idea.  It’ll be easier to look stuff up if you ever need help with your homework during a free.”

Mrs. Gage also views the new policy as a positive change. “It’s good as long as it doesn’t get abused.  If you’re not doing schoolwork and have a free moment, go ahead.  I don’t have a problem with it.”

However, some students and staff expressed concerns about the new policy.  An anonymous sophomore questioned whether or not cheating will be more accessible to students, and many teachers feel that students will still be on their devices when the bell rings, which will only further delay class.  Clearly, there are potential drawbacks – but if people continue to use their phones appropriately, these can be easily avoided.

The new policy is currently not set in stone, so it’s imperative that students do not abuse this new power.  Keep your phones away during classes unless your teacher permits the use, and don’t record videos or take pictures of other students.  Williamsville staff will give feedback about the new policy and eventually decide whether or not students are mature enough to maintain a safe environment that grants the use of these devices.

As a student, I can easily say that the pros outweigh the minor cons and rules of this new policy.  As long as we respect the rules, we can continue to have this major advantage – and you don’t even have to make the extra effort to hide your phones under the commons’ tables anymore!

MLB Races

1280px-Major_League_Baseball.svgBy: Noah Gould

The MLB season is nearing its close. While many of the division titles seem locked up none of them have been clinched, and some of the races remain laser tight. Many interesting storylines have played out over the season and will continue into the playoffs.

The AL East has been led by the Toronto Blues Jays constantly since their big moves at the trading deadline. The Blue Jays helped themselves more than any other team. They traded the farm to acquire David Price, Troy Tulowitzki and Ben Revere. These stars have turned the Blue Jays into one of the most feared teams in the American League. The Revere-Tulo-Donaldson-Bautista-Encarnacion 1-5 in the lineup is the best in the majors. Tulowitzki has been the most impactful trade deadline mover in the AL, and David Price has also been great for the Jays. He has a 2.28 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP in 8 starts since the trade. The Jays rotation and front end of the bullpen isn’t actually that great, but their top of the lineup and ace are good enough to carry them through the playoffs.

The defending AL champion, Kansas City Royals, have had the AL central rapped up since about July. It does seem like the Royals have to be the favorites going into the AL half of the playoffs. While that division race isn’t that interesting the Twins do have a very good chance to win the second AL wild card. The Royals didn’t maintain their high level of play from earlier in the season down this recent stretch, but they will still win their division and most likely be competitive in the playoffs just like last season.

The AL West is probably the most interesting race in all of baseball. It is really the only three team battle. The Houston Astros huge rebuilding project has finally payed off and they are currently leading their division and looking for their first playoff appearance since 2005 and their first division title since 2001. Their entire lineup is filled with young talent and this team is only going to get better in the coming seasons. The Rangers and the Angels are the two teams close on their heels. The Rangers acquired Cole Hamels for 5 prospects at the deadline when it looked like they were going nowhere. Since then they have put a major challenge to Houston for the division and spent weeks narrowly leading in the race for the second wild card. The Angels seem to be having yet another disappointing season which has become the norm since the additions of Pujols, Wilson, Hamilton, and Trout. Eventually Trout will probably find himself leading the team deep into the playoffs, but for now the Angels might find themselves on the outside looking in during the playoffs yet again.

The National League races aren’t quite as interesting. The surprise of this MLB season has probably been the New York Mets. Conversely, the biggest disappointment in the NL is probably the Nationals who are again struggling to stay above .500. The Mets didn’t seem to have a chance at this division title before the year. Their young pitching has carried them and the 42 year old Bartolo Colon has also played extremely well down the stretch. The Mets lineup was the worst in the league through June and was the cause of many losses despite good pitching. Since the trading deadline they have had an offensive explosion. The addition of Cespedes is the headline event. He has been clearly the best hitter in the NL by far since August 1st when he was acquired. At around that time, David Wright and Travis D’around also came off the DL. The Mets also traded for Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson. While neither of them have become starters they have greatly improved the bench and both play well during their occasional starts to spell the regular starters. Another reason for the Mets recent surge has been the call up of 2014 draftee Michael Conforto. He has played extremely well since the first about 75 ABs that he needed to get used to the majors. Conforto is somehow flying under the national radar compared to other rookie call ups, but the Mets will surely be giving him some big at bats in the postseason.

While the NL Central had been dominated by the Cardinals for most of the year it has become a much closer the last few weeks. The Cardinals have gone through a really bad stretch which has allowed the Pirates to make a late run. The Cardinals have had a ton of injuries throughout the year but some of their players will be coming back for the postseason. The Pirates are one of the best teams in the National League, but they might have to play in the one off wild card game despite having the second best record in the league. It looks like this season will be the first time that two teams for the same division meet in the wild card game. It also might be the first time the Cubs win the world series since before the Titanic sank.

The NL West is going similarly to the last few seasons. It is an odd year so the Giants are struggling. They will most likely miss the playoffs the year after winning the world series once again. The Dodgers look poised to win the division and make another playoff run. Their lineup hasn’t been as strong as in years past. Outside of Greinke and Kershaw their rotation has been bad. They have tried numerous different guys and have only gotten bad results. The good news is they probably have the best two pitchers in the league on their team so the do still have a good chance in their postseason starts.

Pink Dolphins Going Extinct

0

By: Claire Kim

PinkDolphin

Hong Kong is home to a unique species of dolphin known as the Chinese white dolphin–contrary to that name, the species is actually famous for its pink coloring. The dolphins were the official mascots of the ceremonies in which Great Britain formally handed over Hong Kong’s sovereignty to China, and to this day, they are a major tourist attraction that draws thousands to Hong Kong’s western waters each year.

However, this colorful dolphin is under threat of extinction.

The habitat that the pink dolphins live in is slowly shrinking, depriving the species of food and shelter. Samantha Lee, conservation manager of the World Wildlife Fund in Hong Kong (WWF-Hong Kong), explains that this has seriously impacted the number of pink dolphins in the wild.

There are five factors that are causing the decline in the dolphin population: habitat loss from coastal development, water pollution, underwater noise pollution, vessel collision and overfishing. Their natural habitat happens to span across one of the most congested marine traffic areas in the world, which increases the risk of injuries from boat propellers. There are also many new projects that are disrupting the habitat, such as the 21-mile bridge that stretches between Hong Kong, Macau, and Zhuhai that is set to open next year.

The WWF is working on conservation initiatives to help prevent some of these threats to the pink dolphins. To decrease the number of accidents, Lee and the WWF are working on a pilot program that would increase and enhance the dolphin-watching business. It would also install propeller guards on all tour boats to protect the dolphins in case they stray too close to the boats.

But for now, Lee says, Hong Kong needs to change its priorities. Instead of putting development first, the government should make conservation of greatest importance. “In this nice area we can still host this kind of lovely marine mammals,” says Lee, “so this is so important to us in order to try our best to fight for a safe haven for these dolphins.”
