American-backed forces in Raqqa say that they have seized the northern Syrian city from ISIS. This is a major defeat for the terrorist organization, as Raqqa has long been used as their capital.
Though admitting there are still pockets of resistance within the city, officers of the Syrian Democratic Forces released public statements saying that they have taken back control of the city after months of fighting.
The fall of Raqqa means that ISIS has lost the two most important cities in its self-proclaimed caliphate in the span of three months. This past July the group was also pushed out of Mosul, which was its second-largest city after Raqqa. Some analysts believe ISIS is preparing for a new phase in their reign in which they´ll morph back into the underground insurgence they started as.
On the verge of liberation, people across the city are rejoicing.
