By Amanda Ojeda and Colleen Meosky
This spring, East now has a new and exciting opportunity for all animal lovers! Advised by Mr. Harrison, Amanda Ojeda and Colleen Meosky will be the co-presidents of the Animal Welfare Club. The mission of the club is to educate students about both wildlife and domestic animal issues and solutions.
Through the use of videos, discussions, and Kahoot games, students will learn how to interact with wildlife in a healthy manner. We will learn about threats to our local and international environment and how intelligent conservation efforts can preserve the unique species of our world.
In addition to the wildlife, we will be discussing topics related to our very own furry and scaly friends. We will learn about the nature of harmful breeding and how to prevent it, as well as helping members determine the perfect pet for them.
Mr. Harrison has a long history of interacting with many different species through his time working at a veterinary clinic and the Buffalo Zoo. Any student of his has heard about some of his experiences working with the gorillas in particular. While Mr. Harrison is definitely an animal person, he still needs to be convinced to become a fan of cats (the secondary purpose of this club).
Meetings will be held in room 325, on Mondays/Tuesdays once every month. Students interested should listen to morning announcements and check WITS to see what weeks meetings will be held. The introductory meeting was held on Tuesday, March 8th, but new members are always welcome to join. We hope to see you soon!
