Novak Djokovic created history on Sunday, September 10th by winning the 2023 US Open Men’s Singles final. He defeated his opponent, Danill Medvedev, after a grueling, intense match. With a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory, Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam singles title, tying Margaret Court’s record and reaffirming himself as one of the greatest tennis players in history.

During the first set, Djokovic came in strong and never faltered, placing his shots expertly, never facing a break point and hitting twelve winners in nine games.

The second set was more competitive. Medvedev gave his all, fighting the legend back, displaying to the crowd an impressive amount of back-and-forth between him and Djokovic. Both of them refused to back down, leading the set into a nail-biting tiebreak. The set was ultimately torn from Medvedev’s hands into Djokovic’s possession after an hour and 45 minute set.

From there, Djokovic had unstoppable momentum and aimed for the US Open trophy unrelentingly. His mental and physical games were at their peak. Medvedev gave quite a fight, but Novak Djokovic emerged victorious in the third set with a score of 6-3, creating history along with the win.

After his match, Djokovic told the crowd, “To make the history of this sport is something truly remarkable and special. I never imagined that I would be here talking about 24 Slams. I never thought that would be the reality, but the last couple of years I felt I have a chance, I have a shot at history—and why not grab it if it’s presented.”

With this victory, the 36-year-old became the oldest man to win the US Open singles title in the Open era and the first man to win three grand slam titles in a season for the fourth time—the previous years being 2011, 2015, and 2021.

Novak Djokovic didn’t play the US Open last year because of vaccine issues, leaving the crown for someone else to take, a new hotshot named Carlos Alcaraz. Now, the legend is back, making his own history. Novak Djokovic has no intention of leaving now.
