In September 2016, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce against her husband Brad Pitt. They’d only married in 2014, but had been together for almost a decade before that. Needless today, the recent news is quite shocking, especially since they’ve had six children together.
Angelina Jolie is seeking custody of her six children, asking the court to grant Pitt visitation rights. When asked about the matter, Pitt said Tuesday in a statement to CNN, “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Angelina Jolie also had the same reaction, desiring to focus on the children. “This decision was made for the health of the family,” Robert Offer, an attorney for Jolie told CNN in a statement Tuesday. “She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time.”
Before Pitt was married to Jolie, Jennifer Aniston was his wife. Shortly after those two divorced, photos of Pitt and Jolie surfaced, causing people to speculate a potential relationship. In early 2006, she and Pitt were expecting their first child, excluding two children Jolie had adopted before. They adopted another child in 2007, and then had twins in 2008. In 2012, the two announced their engagement, and in 2014 they were married in a small, private ceremony in a chapel at Château Miraval in the village of Correns.
It is also interesting to note that Jolie wrote and directed a film about a couple in a troubled marriage in 2015, though she said the characters’ relationship was far from hers and Pitt’s. “I’m counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all, we could never make this film. It’s because we are actually very, very stable and these aren’t our issues.”
It’s sad to see an end to such a long relationship, especially when so many children are involved. Thankfully, both sides desire a cordial breakup.
