King Charles III and Queen Camilla were walking through York on November 9th when an angry protester attempted–and failed–to egg King Charles. The royal couple had been greeting and chatting with the locals when a 23-year-old student threw three to five eggs at them. He managed to miss all of those times, after which he was grabbed by police over the fence and dragged away, still shouting about how “this country was built on the blood of slaves.”
All throughout this fiasco, King Charles was entirely unphased, ignoring the eggs that flew in front of him and broke on the ground by his feet. He calmly finished his conversation with the woman he was talking to. Queen Camilla actually seemed more startled by the provocation than him. The royal couple’s plans were undisturbed by the event, as the walkabout continued as usual.
The student in question, Patrick Thelwell, has since been banned from carrying eggs in public unless he also has the receipt on hand (in other words, unless he’s taking them home from the grocery store). He is also not allowed within 500 feet of the king. Thelwell has since spoken out that he threw the eggs to express that he is against the monarchy and fascism. He believes that the United Kingdom should be dissolved.
