East Girl’s Swim Season Recap

By: Grace Kaiser

Girl’s swimming at East definitely deserves some recognition for having quite the impressive season this year. With a record of 4:4, the girls swam well, despite the challenges they faced with COVID-19. There were 12 new additions to the team, with 13 returning members. The 3 top swimmers were Zoey Griffin, Madden Anderson, and Emily Xu. Griffin, a freshman at East ranked 4th overall in New York State in the 2020-2021 season, with 579.40 points. Anderson, an eighth grader at Transit Middle, ranked 24th in New York State this season, with a total of 513.65 points. Xu, a senior at East, ranked 25th in New York state this season, with a total of 513.30 points. East also had a diver this season; Catherine Braniecki, an eighth grader at Transit Middle, placed second in the 1m diving at the virtual ECIC large school championship meet with a score of 17.00.

ECIC’s were completely different this year for the swimmers. Instead of the whole division coming together to race at one pool, each team swam against one other team (like a dual meet), and times were posted later, combined with all the teams from the separate dual meets. There were also no cut times; in a typical year, a swimmer has to swim a certain time or faster in an event to qualify for the meet, but this year that was waived. The girls were happy to have the opportunity to swim in a championship meet, but the other three meets that usually take place, the Class meet, Sectionals, and States, were cancelled this year.

Girls swimming looks forward to another season and was thankful to have the opportunity to swim this year. Despite the challenges, they had a successful, fun, and rewarding season.
