Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the world of business, which relies on data analysis and efficiency.  Even though AI and business seem to go hand in hand, a recent incident involving Google’s Gemini AI has raised serious questions about the security risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems and their liberal access to confidential information.

The incident itself took place in September 2026, with reports from the Wall Street Journal revealing that Gemini had accessed the computer systems of three real companies during a cybersecurity test conducted by a third party. The test was done by an Israel-based company called Irregular.  The search originally meant to examine Gemini’s ability to exploit any weaknesses in security. But during the test, Irregular found that Gemini reportedly accessed systems that were not supposed to be a part of the evaluation. Google stated that the model stopped after recognizing that it had entered real companies’ systems, and the three  affected organizations were notified.

Because Gemini accidentally entered these organizations’ private finances,  it ended up leaking the financial data of three companies. The entire incident had taken place in May of 2026, but the companies and Google itself found out about the leak in September 2026 after the security check. Furthermore, the fact that this leak happened wasn’t public information till the Wall Street Journal questioned Google about the incident. Wall Street Journal proceeded to push the information out into the  public view by September 18th.  The delay in this information becoming public was questioned by many popular news sources.

While this incident can be seen as a warning for future use of AI by big conglomerations, it can also serve as a warning to the people who use AI daily. Some people use AI like a search engine and/or search something in Google and Gemini for an AI summary. This can call  into question how much AI actually stores our information. Most big companies are considered secure, but if even Google Gemini can leak things about a big company by accident, the unpredictability of AI should be something the daily consumer looks out for.

This incident poses new questions about the use of AI in big cooperations—a seemingly trustworthy brand name like Google still makes mistakes when it comes to new technology. As  science and technology continue on with further advancement, there can be unlikely outcomes and breaches of security. This entire incident is a clear demonstration of why privacy is an important right to protect when it comes to any new technology, especially AI.
