Kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato looked on the internet one day to come across pictures of her dog Kabosu on the internet. What she didn’t realize was that Kabosu was now the main picture of “doge,” the internet meme that features pictures of various Shiba Inu dogs decorated with appropriate comic sans text. The images often contain words such as “such,” “so,” “very,” “wow,” and “much,” followed by an adjective of any kind, usually not fitting with the word that comes before it.
Doge has created a wide variety of responses. While some people have embraced the beautiful simplicity of doge’s incredible word use and it’s comic sans rainbow colored text, a petitioner on the “Make the Doge meme illegal in all forms” petition on Change.org makes the claim that doge “promotes infantile grammar, but reduces the credibility of the Shiba Inu breed by associating itself with the species and reducing something very real to a symbol of low-grade humor.”
Doge, a figure that brings joy and an easily obtainable source of entertainment to many, should not be taken away from the internet. Even if doge promotes the use of poor grammar, the entertainment it has brought to thousands of internet users clearly outweighs a few misplaced words. The claim that Shiba Inus are reduced by the doge meme is a huge misunderstanding, as they are praised greatly by the doge loving community, and are able to generate much more than what the critics call “low-grade humor.” As an example, this internet meme led to creation of the virtual currency Dogecoin. Shortly after the launch of Dogecoin, it had shown more than a 900% in increase in value, during a time when other virtual currencies were failing from China’s decision to forbid Chinese banks from investing into bitcoins. In addition to providing entertainment, doge has also generated economic value after the creation of Dogecoins.
From the utilitarian viewpoint, low-grade humor is just as good as any other kind of humor, so long as it raises the overall happiness of the general population, something that doge does very well. Thus, leave doge alone, and blame cate for all your troubles and suffering. Remember, doge is love, doge is life. If you are lost in this world, doge will show you the way. Doge can only love, and it is your job to accept his love, or face an eternity of suffering with cate. No tears now, only doge.
