Among the many that are competing at this year’s Olympics, you can guarantee that the majority of athletes will not be thinking like Mexico’s Hubertus von Hohenlohe, participant in the men’s slalom. Instead of hoping for a medal, or maybe a chance to go against the world’s top professionals, von Hohenlohe is hoping to get the title of best-dressed at the Games.
Hubertus von Hohenlohe, age 55, is not only Mexico’s only athlete going to Sochi, but a descendant of German royalty, professional musician, automobile fortune heir, multilingual, and a world-class photographer to boot, not to mention his colorful racing suits which sparked an interest in him at Vancouver. For his sixth Olympics, he will be wearing a mariachi-themed race suit as he’s skiing down the slopes of the Aibga Ridge. The inspiration behind this design is his wish to celebrate an element of Mexico while on the slopes. “I want to celebrate [Mexico’s past and culture], but…in my own style,” he says of the suit.
At the very least, von Hohenlohe’s turn down the slopes will be one of the many things to look forward to during the Olympics.
