Throughout the colorful corridors of East High, students can be seen milling around the building every day. All of them take different classes, have different interests, and come from different backgrounds. These differences in personality and aptitudes are what make us unique, and while we all want to be equal and work together, we love our differences as they’re what make us special.
In the club Unity in Diversity, they do just that. People from all grades, freshmen to seniors, join together to celebrate our cultures and backgrounds. From the beginning of the year, members of Unity work hard to put together groups for their performance. There are a variety of groups for all different countries. Some students strive to choreograph, learn, and prepare a dance, but others may just read a poem in a different language. All of their efforts are for a big performance held in early March. “Even though it takes so much work, it really pays off when you see the entire show come together,” sophomore Divija Kambala said .
All the members of Unity also share passion and enthusiasm for the club. “I always get to meet new people and make new friends,” Vice President Michelle Qiu said. “Unity is something I look forward and always get excited about.”
Although it takes a lot of hard work and dedication, member Cynthia Cheng pointed out, “As a freshman, I was pretty nervous about high school and all the clubs. I don’t talk to a lot of people, but I really felt comfortable and excited when I joined Unity.”
Now you may be thinking, “Wow! I really wish I was a part of this club!” If that’s the case, you still have a chance! The Spain group is looking for more members to take part in their group act. If you’re interested, make sure to stop by to talk to Mr. Huber or talk to the president, vice president, or secretary of the club who are Katherine Fu, Michelle Qiu, and Bhavana Upadhyaya, respectively.
