If you haven’t heard the news from (*checks calendar*) a month ago, then I wonder if you’ve time traveled here from the dark ages. On August 8, 2022, former president Donald Trump had his house raided by the FBI, where they found multiple boxes of classified documents, including some labeled top secret. This also isn’t the first time that Trump has mismanaged files. In 2018, it was reported that files that were supposed to be turned over to the National Archives were ripped up consistently throughout the presidency. This was reaffirmed in January of 2022
Now back to the present. Trump’s request for a special master to review the documents was approved, and the FBI was ordered to stop reviewing the documents (although they had already gone through most of them) until the special master, who will be appointed by the court, can determine what documents can be used as evidence (Trump’s legal team has suggested that some documents being made public would violate attorney-client privilege). While I get the motion, it’s hard to understand the timeline. Trump requested the special master *three weeks* after the raid, either because it was a last resort or because he wasted three weeks stirring up the MAGA crowd that he keeps screwing out of their money (Trump Gold Card, anyone?). Probably a bit of both. But I digress.
Was it really a surprise that Trump is facing legal trouble? Seriously, with the amount of people around Trump who have been convicted of various crimes, it seemed to be only a matter of time before Trump himself faced some trouble of his own (in case you’re keeping track, 10 associates, including 3 campaign managers, his CFO, and his lawyer, have all been criminally convicted for crimes committed *for Trump*). As Trevor Noah put it, “they have enough people to form their own prison gang.” Not to mention, Trump always had the same excuse for each case: he did not know these acts were being committed, despite testimony from Michael Cohen very clearly suggesting otherwise (also, what a great thing for the president of the United States to say).
What was Trump’s reaction, you ask? He did what he always does, stoking fear among his supporters with his baseless lies, writing, “Even though I am as innocent as a person can be, and despite MY campaign being spied on by the Radical Left, the FISA COURT being lied to and defrauded, all of the many Hoaxes and Scams that were illegally placed on my by very sick & demented people, and without even mentioning the many crimes of Joe and Hunter Biden, all revealed in great detail in the Laptop From Hell, it looks more and more like the Fake News Media is pushing hard for the Sleaze to do something that should not be done,” a statement I like to imagine went against legal advice (or any real sensibility).
Of course Trump is still holding out hopes of running in 2024 (which, at this point, may be the only way Biden gets reelected). But the dominos are falling in the wrong direction, and it seems as though Trump may finally pay for his crimes; actually, scratch that, he’ll just use the Save America campaign funds to pay the bail money.
