Back in 2014, a movie known as The LEGO Movie was one of the year’s biggest surprises, was a critical & financial success, and got snubbed for an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. After the movie’s success, I was really excited to hear when Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Animation Group, and DC Entertainment announced they were making a spin-off film about one of The LEGO Movie’s best characters, Batman. Thankfully, this movie wasn’t a disappointment and was consistently funny from start to finish.
There are big changes brewing in Gotham City, and if Batman wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up while raising his new son, Robin.
The LEGO Batman Movie is an absolute blast at the cinema with a consistently hilarious, action-packed, and surprising heartfelt story with a strong message about family and never has a boring moment, fantastic animation that has the same “computer animation that looks like stop-motion” style of the first Lego Movie. And a large cast of well-developed and hilarious characters with great performances from the cast, notably Will Arnett returning as Batman, Zach Galifianakis as the Joker, Michael Cera as Robin (one of the most perfect casting choices), Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon, and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred. The humor is the best part of the movie with great laugh-a-minute gags that even poke fun at every previous film incarnation of Batman from more recent Batmen like Ben Affleck and Christian Bale to earlier interpretations of the character like Adam West and Michael Keaton. This movie is also has a good attention to detail with tons of hidden easter eggs in every second that you can find something new upon every viewing.
Overall, The LEGO Batman Movie is a must-watch for any fan of Lego, Batman, or DC. And I think it might be a safe bet to say that this will probably the best film that has DC’s logo plastered on it this year, if Wonder Woman isn’t another disappointment like DC’s previous disasters. I recommend seeing this in theaters with your family and buying it on Blu-ray when that will be released later this year! I’m going to give The LEGO Batman Movie a 10/10 with the Edward’s Seal of Approval and my highest recommendation.
