The Golden Globes are often considered as the appetizers before the main course, in this case is the Academy Awards, of awards shows. There were many well known highlights like Oprah Winfrey’s speech, Natalie Portman’s jab at the “all-male” nominees for Best Director when presenting the award with Ron Howard, and the most unexpected guest appearance at the Golden Globes. There was also the fact that many women who attended the Globes wore black dresses as a way to support Time’s Up, a new movement against sexual harassment in Hollywood and beyond. Sexual harassment made big headlines in 2017 after many well-known people in the entertainment industry got their careers destroyed by allegations with film producer Harvey Weinstein, comedian Louis C.K., and actor Kevin Spacey being the most notable.
But back on to the Golden Globes, the big winner for film at this year’s Golden Globes was the drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri garnering 4 wins for Best Drama Picture, Best Actress in a Drama for Frances McDormand, Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell, and Best Screenplay. Tied with 2 wins each were the fantasy drama The Shape of Water winning Best Original Score and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro, and the comedy drama Lady Bird winning Best Musical/Comedy Picture and Best Actress in a Comedy for Saoirse Ronan. Other movies that got a win included Coco for Best Animated Feature Film, Darkest Hour for Best Actor in a Drama for Gary Oldman, I, Tonya for Best Supporting Actress for Allison Janney, In the Fade for Best Foreign Language Film, The Greatest Showman for Best Original Song for “This Is Me”, and The Disaster Artist for Best Actor in a Comedy for James Franco. And the later had one of the most memorable parts at the show when James Franco came up to accept his award, he also invited both his younger brother Dave Franco, who played Greg Sestero in the film, and the guy James played in The Disaster Artist, Tommy Wiseau, the writer, director, producer, and star of The Room, with him to the stage and Franco gave him a little nudge off to the side while he was giving his speech for his win. Wiseau did state what he would’ve said if he got a chance to speak was “If a lot of people love each other, the world would be a better place to live.” Which was a quote that Wiseau’s character Johnny says in The Room. He continued “Go see The Room, have fun, and enjoy life. The American Dream is alive, and it’s real.”
The big winner for television this year was the HBO drama Big Little Lies getting 4 wins for Best Miniseries or Television Film, Best Actress in a Miniseries for Nicole Kidman, Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries for Alexander Skarsgård, and Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries for Laura Dern. Tied with 2 wins each were the Hulu drama The Handmaid’s Tale winning Best Drama Series and Best Actress in a Drama for Elisabeth Moss, and the Amazon comedy drama The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel winning Best Musical/Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy for Rachel Brosnahan. Other shows that got a win included This is Us for Best Actor in a Drama for Sterling K. Brown, Master of None for Best Actor in a Comedy for Aziz Ansari, and Fargo for Best Actor in a Miniseries for Ewan McGregor.
Congratulations to all the winners at the Golden Globes for their fantastic job on their projects and we’ll see what happens next year for the 76th Globes.
