The Streamy Awards are an award show that you probably haven’t heard of unless you’re an avid Youtube video watcher like me. This unique award show honors Youtube video creators . The awards focus on Youtube and a few other media platforms like Vine (does anyone use Vine anymore?) and Snapchat (We have our own WEHS geotag!!). This year was the 5th annual Streamy Awards. This year was special because it was the first national television broadcast of the show, which premiered on VH1 on September 17th. I tuned in to watch the show, and I recommend you giving them a watch, it was very entertaining (and a little bit confusing. Who are some of these nominees?). The entire show is available on demand through VH1’s Youtube channel.
44 awards were given away, including the “Entertainer of the Year” and the “Show of the Year,” which were entirely determined by online votes (Put the power in the fangirls hands right?). The nominees for “Entertainer of the Year” were Cameron Dallas, Connor Franta, Grace Helbig, Jack & Jack, Jenna Marbles, Kandee Johnson, King Bach, Miranda Sings, IISuperwomanII, and Tyler Oakley. Personally, I would’ve picked Connor Franta because he is one of my favorite Youtubers. But, (spoiler alert) Cameron Dallas won the award. The nominees for “Show of the Year” were EncufeTV, fouseyTUBE, Good Mythical Morning, The Philip DeFranco Show, PrankvsPrank, Rooster Teeth, Smosh, SourceFed, Teens React, and Video Game High School. The winner of this award was (another spoiler alert) fouseyTUBE.
There were 8 award categories, which were “Audience Choice,” “Awards for Channels, Series, or Shows,” “Subject Awards,” “Performance Awards,” “Music Awards,” “Craft Awards,” “Social Video Awards,” and “Campaign Awards.”
This year’s Streamy’s were hosted by Grace Helbig and Tyler Oakley, who are two of my favorite YouTubers. They are absolutely hilarious, and they both have their own book and podcast (I’ve never actually listened to a podcast before). I recommend you give some of their videos a watch, maybe even a subscribe. The awards opened with a musical performance by Hailee Steinfeld, and closed with a musical performance by Sir Mix-A-Lot (name goals). Throughout the show, there were other performances by Futuristic, Future, OMI, and A Great Big World. There were many presenters for the awards, including Paula Abdul, Natasha Bedingfield, Nene Leakes, Ciara, and many more.
As many recent news stories have pointed out, Youtube is responsible for the launch of many successful celebrities careers, such as Bethany Mota, who was on the past season of Dancing With the Stars. Or more famously known, Colleen Ballinger, who plays the character Miranda Sings, whom of which we all know and love (I impersonate Miranda at least 20 times a day). Youtube is slowly taking over the world one view at a time.
All in all, the Streamy Awards are a well-rounded awards show. I personally enjoyed the show because of my interest in Youtube and other social medias. If you like Youtube or have never spent the time (hours) to watch some videos, I strongly suggest you do. I watch YouTube more than I talk to my own friends so, watch at your own risk. All of these video creators spend a lot of time making their content. For most of them, it’s their job. So, if you want a good time, go to www.youtube.com and click away.
