The Buffalo Sabres took on the New York Rangers in the 10th anniversary of the NHL’s Winter Classic. In the 2008 Winter Classic, the Sabres lost 2-1 in shootout against the Pittsburgh Penguins and were hoping that history didn’t repeat itself. Sadly, the Sabres lost once again, this time 3-2 to the New York Rangers in overtime. The Sabres quickly dug themselves into a hole, going down 2-0 in the first period. The Sabres, however, were determined to win this game and Sam Reinhart put the Sabres on the board with a goal, assists from Rasmus Ristolainen and Jack Eichel. In the third period, Ristolainen tied the game 2-2 with a wicked wrist shot from the point that stunned the Rangers’ goalie. The game was tied going into overtime, but it only took 2 minutes and 43 seconds for Rangers’ J.T. Miller to give the Rangers the 3-2 win. This loss comes as a part of the very disappointing season the Sabres are currently having, as they sit second-last in the NHL in points. The Sabres were expected to be competing for a playoff spot this season, but this loss in the Winter Classic only magnifies their struggles.
