After months of blocked corridors and relocated classrooms, East students and faculty can finally enjoy their renovated third floor. The carpet has been replaced with a series of carpet squares, which will be easier to replace when they were out in the future. The ceiling has also been replaced; because of this, the dividers that once separated most of the third floor’s classrooms have been replaced with drywall partitions. Their minimal effect on the school’s open classroom environment has allowed it to gain the support of many students and faculty despite the inconvenience one had to deal with when the renovations were being done.
Students and faculty can look forward to about another year and a half of renovations for the second and first floor. Ceilings will be replaced on both floors; the second floor will also receive new carpet squares and new lockers. Though the initial plan for renovations involved replacing the carpet in East’s “hallways” with rubberized tile, the hallways will also receive carpet squares since the trial section of tile in the English wing has met with widespread disapproval. Classrooms with windows on the second floor will be getting new drywall partitions to replace the screens that are being used now. This is because the ceiling tiles that support the screen system are outdated. Sinks and toilets will be replaced in all bathrooms. Since the science wing was already renovated a few years ago, it will be exempt from the current renovations.
Because of these renovations, there will be no summer school at East for the next two years.
