TV Review: The Walking Dead *Spoiler Alert*

By Eisa Hashmi-97ccf1d1-0af1-444b-b35e-11e9db43314f

The Walking Dead, love it or hate it, has returned. The polarizing show has come back with a season premier to satisfy die hard fans as well as regular TV watchers.  Full of action, suspense, and drama that we actually care about, “No Sanctuary” proves that season six will be one of the best.

We return at Terminus, the sanctuary that proves to be anything but. On the last episode of season five, we have Rick and the group being imprisoned by the people of Terminus. He rejoins with Maggie and Glenn as well as a few new faces and delivers that epic line, “They’re screwing with the wrong people,” to hint that they will fight back against the potentially cannibalistic people of Terminus.

The opening of episode 501, “No Sanctuary,” answers many questions that season five left for the audience such as where is Carol, how will they get out of this, and are the Terminites really cannibals? We open on the group locked in a train car making makeshift weapons out of belt buckles, pieces of wood, and other random pieces of clothing and gear that is still left on them.

Glenn, Rick, Bob, and Daryl along with three other random survivors were taken to a room where the season’s first amazing visual effects were shown.

After the haunting display of gore, we are treated to a thirty minute action sequence involving explosions, gunfire, and of course zombies. It is here where we see Executive Producer, Greg Nicotero’s visual effects talent shine with some of the best zombie kills ever put to TV or film.

Episode one of season six was an explosive and exciting start to the sixth season of The Walking Dead. “No Sanctuary,” proves that season six will be a more action packed and exciting season with little to no boring and unnecessary exposition.

Top 10 Non-Scary Halloween Movies

by Emma Valenzanightmarebeforexmas

It’s that time of the year again, where all coffee shops advertise their“Pumpkin Spice” flavored everything, and the trees start the iconic ritual of shedding their now orange, red and yellow leaves. It’s also that time of year when Buffalo starts to become that frigid place we all know and love, marking the end of the warm weather that we won’t see again until April of next year. The biggest part of the month of October however, is Halloween. The 31st is a day that both children and adults alike look forward to each year, from the candy and costumes, to the Halloween parties and decorations, most everyone can find something to love about Halloween. Some of the best parts about Halloween are the movies that stem from the holiday, most being horror and gore filled. Though mostly entertaining, horror movies can get old after a while, so it’s always nice to sit back and watch a movie where someone isn’t running somewhere they shouldn’t be every two seconds. For those of us horror fans who need a break, and for those who run in fear when even the word “horror” is mentioned, here is a list of ten not-so-scary Halloween movies to get you in the mood for this spooky and fun filled holiday.

Corpse Bride (2005)
The Corpse Bride follows the story of Victor, a young man in a nineteenth century European village who is to be wed to a girl he has never met until the day they go to practice the wedding ceremony. Upon meeting each other, they instantly fall in love, but due to Victor’s shy nature, he ends up messing up his vows and running out of the house and into the forest in embarrassment. Once in the forest, he practices his vows in front of a tree and puts his soon-to-be-wife’s ring on a gnarled branch sticking out of the ground, which turns out to be a dead woman’s finger. The woman rises from the grave and assumes that they are now married, whisking him away to the land of the dead. The Corpse Bride is a creepy, heartwarming tale full of music, fun, and almost everything in between to get you ready for Halloween.

Casper (1995)
Casper has always struggled with being lonely in his house, having no one except his three other mean ghost uncles for company. When a paranormal expert and his daughter are hired to exercise the house, and move into the home to do so, Casper befriends the girl and tries to bring himself back to life in order to be with her. Filled with laughs, ghosts and a cute love story, this film should be a must watch every Halloween.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Dreamed up by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a story about Jack Skellington, known as The Pumpkin King to the citizens of Halloween Town, and his quest to break from the same routine he does year after year. After he leads the celebration of another successful Halloween, Jack wanders into the woods and stumbles upon a series of portals to different holidays, accidentally falling into the Christmas portal which causes disaster to ensue. Filled with wonderful characters and catchy tunes, The Nightmare Before Christmas is sure to get you into the spirit of Halloween.
The Haunted Mansion (2003)
This iconic movie follows the story of Jim Evers, his wife and business partner Sara, and their two kids who are summoned to the Gracey manor when they find out that Mr. Gracey is looking to sell his mansion. When Mr. Gracey meets Sara he is immediately smitten with her due to the fact that she looks like his girlfriend Elizabeth, who was believed to have committed suicide. When he tries to claim her for his own, however, Jim and his children must save his wife from Mr. Gracey and his faithful butler Ramsley. Modeled after the well-known ride in Disney World, the creepiness of the manor and the humor which the actors bring to the table, as well as the interesting plot make this an excellent movie for Halloween.

Frakenweenie (2012)
After Victor’s dog Sparky unexpectedly dies, Victor harnesses the power of lightning in order to bring his animal friend back to life. When the town finds out, they’re whipped into a frenzy, causing Victor to face unintended and monstrous consequences. Frakenweenie’s cast of interesting and creepy characters should be enough to spark your love of Halloween!

The Addams Family (1991)
Gomez Addams laments everyday about the disappearance of his brother Fester, who disappeared after the two had a falling out. His lawyer finds out that his brother has been missing and notices that her son looks a lot like him, so she proposes he pose as the long lost Fester in order to infiltrate their vault and steal the family’s riches in order to pay off her own debts. The strange and creepy family welcomes Fester into their household, but soon grows suspicious that he doesn’t seem to remember anything from his past with his brother Gomez. The dark humor and creepiness of all the characters makes this film perfect for Halloween.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)
In a castle on top of a hill lives Edward, an inventor’s greatest creation. He’s nearly complete, except for one thing, he has scissors for hands because the inventor died before he could finish him. When a woman finds him and welcomes him into her home, the town welcomes him at first and he falls in love with a girl named Kim. As time goes on however, things begin to take a turn for the worse. The quiet mannerism of Edward and the humor that fills this movie is sure to make this one of your go to Halloween movies.

Monster House (2006)
Teenager DJ lives across the street from his mean neighbor Nebbercracker, who destroys the bikes and tricycles of anyone who trespasses on his lawn. One day when he and his friend Chowder are playing basketball and the ball lands in Nebbercracker’s yard, they soon find out that the house is a living and breathing monster and it’s up to them to find out how to destroy it. The beautiful animation, coupled with the amazing plot is what makes this movie special and a favorite for Halloween.

Coraline (2005)
Coraline follows the story of a young girl who is unhappy about moving to a new house with her busy and dismissive parents. The adventurous and often ignored girl finds a door to another world in her new home after she finds a small doll that looks exactly like her. In the new world, she finds alternate versions of her parents and neighbors, who have all flipped drastically in personality and mannerisms compared to their real-world selves. They all look almost exactly the same as their real-world models except for one thing: they all have button eyes. This story is not for the faint of heart, and though it’s on this list, it still has its pretty creepy moments that will have you hiding under your safety blanket. Nevertheless, its colorful animation and storyline, as well as its fun yet sometimes deceiving characters make it a must watch for Halloween!

Hotel Transylvania (2012)
Count Dracula, who operates a hotel and high-end resort for monsters in his castle far away from the human world, goes into bat-crazy mode when a human named Jonathan stumbles upon his hotel and develops a huge crush on his daughter, Mavis. He does not, however, tell Mavis or anyone else that he’s a human in order to keep all of the monsters in the hotel from freaking out, making him come off as unnecessarily mean as he tries to get the boy to leave. Its cast of funny monsters and colorful animation make it a gem of a movie, and something perfect to watch for Halloween.

ISIS Recruiting New Members

By Claire Kim

recruitsThe name ISIS should be familiar to many, considering how it has dominated a good portion of the media for some time. Short for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, it has since changed its name again to simply IS, Islamic State, and will be referred to as such for the rest of the article.

IS has had a fairly short rise to infamy. It first attracted world-wide attention in February, when it was cut off from Al-Qaeda for its brutality and “notorious intractability”; since then, it has had an almost meteoric rise in membership. This increase in members surprisingly consists of a great deal of Westerners–the majority from Arab countries, but also recruits from the EU, US, Canada, and Australia.

ISIS’s recruiting tactics are surprisingly modern and up-to-date. Using a blend of social media, such as Instagram and Twitter, they use a constantly changing number of accounts to describe and depict their life as jihads.

ISIS is particularly welcoming to foreign fighters, even if they don’t speak Arabic, or don’t have military training. Westerners can simply arrive one day, ask for a gun, and get one. Simple.

The jihadists are fairly dedicated to their media, which has a huge sway in attracting fresh recruits. Using sites such as ask.fm and Kik, among others, Western fighters can answer questions that potential recruits have. For the most part, the life they portray is warm and important, to sway the indecisive to joining their cause. However, these online identities can also be brutal and horrifying. Pictures of cats and sunsets can just as easily be followed with, say, a pyramid of severed heads.

Indian PM Visits US

by Harleen Kaur

modiThis September Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, came to the United States. Modi was just elected prime minister this past May representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, and only a few months later he was invited by President Obama to come to the US and present two speeches, one in Madison Square Garden to the public, and one to the United Nations General Assembly.

Over 18000 people came to Madison Square Garden in order to hear Modi’s speech in which he talked about the duty of all American Indians is to give back to their home country. He explained that India is no longer a colony or a country characterized by “snake-charmers.” Now India has transformed and is now one of the top 10 best economies in the world. Modi explained that over 65 percent of the population in India is under the age of 35, so they have the potential to “dominate the world.” In order to achieve this, Modi said that all Indians must follow Gandhi’s guidance of not only nonviolence but also supporting India, your home country. Gandhi too was an immigrant and he could have chosen to live in Britain or South Africa for the rest of his life, but instead he came back to India as an educated man in order to help his country. Modi says to take his actions as a guideline by not necessarily moving back to India, but buying Indian products and supporting the Indian economy.

Modi’s overall talk to the public has not been as heavily criticized as his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. Modi was able to talk about some major world issues such as the rising power of ISIS, the related issues in Pakistan, and he did ask for reforms from the UN. Although, some say that Modi failed to bring up the rising issues in Kashmir and press down on how Pakistan was related. Although, he was able to make his key points known and explain them well, but was unable to fully connect them to every issue.

ISIS Flags in Kashmir

by Alex Marinidesis

Flags bearing the symbol of Jihadist group the Islamic State (IS) have been spotted in Kashmir, reports state.

The incident occurred on the Muslim holy day of Eid. Masked men were seen carrying around IS flags after celebrations that marked the occasion.

Indian Lieutenant General  Subrata Saha stated that the event “deserves the highest attention of the security agencies” in order to prevent youth in the region being lured into terrorism.

The rise of the Islamic State and other militant groups has been a cause for concern for India, with fears that Jihadist fighters will trickle across the border between Pakistan and India.

This is the second such incident in over a week, when a protester was seen waving the terror group’s flag after Eid prayers.

The chief minister of Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, stated to the press that “You have to understand that no ISIS group has been identified so far in the valley. The flag… was waved by some idiots, which does not mean that ISIS has any presence in Kashmir.”

The concern felt by many, including Saha, is that while there may not be a current IS presence in Kashmir, it is possible that the youth in the embattled region, long a point of contention between India and Pakistan, will be attracted to militancy.

Canadian Parliament Shooting

by Noah GouldCANADA-ATTACKS-SHOOTING

On Wednesday shots were fired outside the Canadian Parliament building. Witness reports vary, but it seems that somewhere between 20 and 30 shots were fired. The building was quickly put under lockdown and Prime Minister Harper was taken to safety. He had been addressing his cabinet at the time. “This means stay in your office, with the doors locked and away from the windows. If your door does not lock, find a way to barricade the door, if possible,” read the lockdown alert, circulated by email. “Do not open the door under any circumstances. Security Services has the required keys.” Prime Minister Harper later described the attack as a “despicable attack”. Early reports said that only three people were killed. The reports said that two were soldiers and one was the shooter.

Witness Scott Walsh was walking on the sidewalk a few blocks away from the Parliament building. He saw a man jump out of his Toyota Corolla and leave it running in the street. “He had a double-barrelled shotgun, he was about five feet from me, and he ran right beside us, ran past the woman with the stroller and child,” he said. Walsh than, at gunpoint, hijacked a dark car and drove to the Parliament building.

The shooter ran out of the black van parked in front of the parliament building. The two soldiers killed were guarding the war memorial outside the parliament building. After shooting them the shooter continued running into the parliament building. Police followed the shooter into the building. During the ensuing gunfight inside the shooter was killed.

An Ottawa hospital said that it received three patients one was pronounced dead the other two are in stable condition. The Canadian government reached out to the White House for help catching the terrorists. The FBI and NSA have already started working with Canadian officials in the investigation.Canada announced earlier this month that it will be joining in the campaign against Islamic Militant groups in Iraq. No information about the shooters has been released at this time. Police said the situation was “ongoing and fluid’. Marc Coucy of the Ottawa Police said they were looking for “multiple suspects” in shootings at three locations. Two days earlier in Ottawa a solider had been killed by a car driven by a jihadist sympathizer.

Varsity Girls’ Tennis

0

by Ananya Murthy and Caroline Wang

The Williamsville East varsity tennis team finished its 2014 season two weeks ago, coming in second place in Division Two for the first time in almost two decades. Though East reigned undefeated for seventeen years, Hamburg managed to slide into first place–but only just. Both matches against Hamburg were extremely close, with Hamburg winning by one point each time.

This year, East sent two singles and two doubles to ECICs. First singles Ananya Murthy and second singles Amy Xiao competed in the singles tournament two weeks ago at Village Glen. As for doubles, first doubles Caroline Wang and Sanjana Singh played as the first team, while third singles Prerna Singh and second doubles Caitlyn Littlewood played as the second team from Williamsville East at the doubles tournament last weekend.

Murthy won the first match she played on Friday 6-0, 6-0 against Lakeshore, and made it through a grueling four hour match against Lancaster’s second singles with the score of 3-6, 6-4, and 7-6, qualifying for sectionals. Immediately afterwards, she played her third match against Lancaster’s first singles in order to determine seeding for sectionals, losing 1-6, 1-6 and finishing at 9pm. On Saturday, she played another two matches for seeding. Murthy won 6-4, 6-3 against Hamburg and 6-1, 6-3 against North, putting her at fifth seed. Xiao, unfortunately, was eliminated in the second round.

Wang and Singh won the first match they played 6-3, 6-3 against Alden, as well as the second match they played (1-6, 6-4, 7-5) against Amherst, qualifying for sectionals. However, in the third match, also to determine seeding, they lost against North. On Saturday, they lost their matches against East Aurora’s first doubles and to Hamburg’s first doubles, putting them at eighth seed overall. Singh and Littlewood were eliminated in the first round against East Aurora’s second doubles. Surprisingly, Orchard Park’s second doubles won the tournament, facing off in the finals against Orchard Park’s first doubles–just like last year.

Sectionals will be at Village Glen again this Friday and Saturday, with Murthy, Wang, and Singh in attendance.

Who Says Fire Can’t Burn Underwater?

0

The girls swim team, led by Coach Doerfler and Coach Miller, ended a strong season on Tuesday, October 14th.  The team only had two losses and will be sending many of its swimmers to local championships.

The regular meet season consists of nine dual  meets, where swimmers have the chance to qualify for ECICs, Sectionals, or States if they swim faster than the cut times in their chosen events.  East faces off against Jamestown, Hamburg, Williamsville North, Clarence, Orchard Park, Frontier, Lancaster, West Seneca West, and Sweet Home in their division.  Home meets are held at Transit Middle School’s pool.  If they meet the cut times, swimmers can swim in the ECIC AA meet at Clarence in late October, the Section VI meet in ECC and the State meet at Ithaca College.

Members of the team have been enduring grueling two-hour practices since late August.  In addition to countless fast-paced sets in the pool, the swimmers also do dryland workouts that focus on increasing strength and endurance.  They also focus on refining their technique and on improving their starts and flipturns.  “Even though it’s a hard sport, it’s worth it,” said junior Katie Holmwood.

The swim team is very close-knit; many members forge new friendships during practice and at meets.  “I love all the friends I’ve made—they’re like family.  I’ll miss them so much!” said senior Erin Clough.  Says Coach Chris on the matter, “Only the cool kids swim.”

We wish the swim team all the best at ECICs, Sectionals, and States!

FBLA Fall District Meeting at East

0

On Thursday, October 16, Williamsville East hosted over 70 students and advisers from across Western New York for the Future Business Leaders of America District 12 Fall District Meeting. This is a big year in FBLA for Williamsville East, which has three NYS FBLA state officers: Robin Marshall, State Secretary, Shubhangi Mehra, State Parliamentarian, and Melissa Li, District 12 State Vice President.

The Fall District Meeting, organized annually by the state vice president, is an opportunity for FBLA members to learn new business skills, attend workshops, network with their peers, and more. The keynote speaker at this year’s FDM was Steve Meyer, the current Democratic candidate for the 146th District of the NYS Assembly (and Williamsville East alum). Mr. Meyer gave an inspiring speech about how enthusiasm and determination led to his success as one of the youngest politicians in the state.

Additionally, chapter officers from all three schools were inducted at FDM in a candle-lighting ceremony, and district officer candidates underwent interviews. This year’s District 12 district officers are all from Williamsville East: Aniruddha Nrusimha, district secretary, Michelle Dao, district historian, and Sarah Wie, district reporter. These students will aid the State Vice President in discharging her duties and conducting future meetings. Other FDM activities Thursday night included a Battle of the Best trivia contest (Alanna Kramer, our school’s chapter parliamentarian, won 2nd place), team building games, a presentation by NYS FBLA state officer advisor Mr. Josh Wallace on how to run for state office, and a dinner catered by Chipotle.

The Fall District Meeting is always a highly successful FBLA event, and this year’s was no exception. It’s an opportunity for our members to dress up in their best business attire and learn a little about the organization, but more importantly, FDM is a chance for students from different schools to network and get to know each other. This people-centric experience is just as fulfilling as learning how to conduct a meeting using Parliamentary Procedure or other business facts.
