Mumbai Train Bombers Brought to Justice

Mumbai_skyline88907By: Garrett Speller

Picture a train in Mumbai, India in 2006. It’s loud, full of people clamoring to get home from work. Then, starting at 6:30, a series of blasts ripped apart the first class cabins of multiple trains running on the backbone of the city’s network. The bombs were retrofitted pressure cookers, similar to the infamous Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. When the dust settled 11 minutes later, 200 people were dead and another 700 were injured.

These blasts sent authorities into high alert; both airports and Mumbai were sent into lockdown, and the subway was temporarily closed. Police found and quickly diffused another explosive on the Churchgate-Variar line. Authorities trying to help victims stuck in the wreckage were significantly hampered by the heavy rain that night, but when other people who were on the trains began to help, the relief effort sped up quickly. At the end of the crisis, 12 people were arrested and charged with the crime.

After nine long years, the trial is complete. Last week, the Indian court decided to carry out the death penalty on five of the arrested suspects.

NASA Finds Water on Mars

NASA_logo.svgBy: Nicole Kazmierczak

NASA has recently confirmed that there is liquid water flowing on present-day Mars. The discovery comes after many years of research on the desert planet. Typically when you hear about water on a planet like Mars, you would think of ancient or frozen water thought to be embedded beneath the surface. This time, however, the water is ebbing and flowing as it would on Earth, no matter how little the amount.

Earth was originally thought to be the most unique local planet as it was thought to be the only place from which to get a drink of that liquid wonder. But as history has proven, one should not assume, especially in science. Humans could potentially relocate to Mars if Earth ever becomes uninhabitable in the distant future. However, we shouldn’t be reaching for a nice cold glass of refreshing Mars water the next time we find ourselves feeling parched. That is, unless you enjoy dirty, salty water. The only reason this Martian water is able to exist is because it is salty and dirty, full of a type of hydrated salt called perchlorate. The perchlorate is what allows the water to exist in the harsh and cold environment that Mars provides.

Despite this discovery being amazing as it is, and how much more amazing it would be if we could get a sample, the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 prevents any nation on Earth from sending a robot or human close to a foreign water source on as the source could become contaminated. While any equipment or rovers sent to Mars are sterilized as much as possible, there is still the chance that a microbial hitchhiker is along for the ride.

The discovery of water on Mars is one of hope and inspiration. If water exists, who knows what else could be out there? The opportunity for colonization on Mars is now even more real, although a long way from happening. It just goes to show – don’t judge a dusty red planet by its cover!

Catholic Church is Forced to Confront Issue of Homosexuality

pfBy: Kasey Vangelov

On October 3rd, High ranking Vatican priest Monsignor Krzysztof Charamsa lost his position in the Catholic Church after coming out as gay on October 3rd.  This took place on the day before the Catholic Church’s Synod on the Family, a meeting called by the Pope in which important bishops discuss the church’s teachings on family life. This would cover topics such as how the church should treat homosexuality, cohabitation before marriage, and divorce.

Krzysztof Charamsa came out with pride, hoping his actions would change the Church’s “backward” views on “homosexuality”.  Charamsa said that he knew doing so would cause him to lose his job, but he felt it was his duty as a sexual minority to do so.

He is being condemned by the chief Vatican spokesman.  His actions are being described as “very serious and irresponsible, since it aims to subject the synod assembly to undue media pressure.”

However, there are hints that the Church is softening its views towards traditional values.

Pope Francis recently stated, “if a person is gay and seeks God and has goodwill, who am I to judge him?”

He also spoke of women’s importance to the Church, and said that despite their inability to be priests, their role in the Church should not be limited.

However, nothing officially has been done, and it is still apparent that the church censures non-traditional behavior.  The Church’s teachings ban artificial conception and promote the idea that marriage is insoluble.  And, despite the Pope’s comments against judging homosexuals, the Church does not accept gay marriage.  This can be noted in the recent controversy regarding Pope Francis’ meeting with Kim Davis.

Kim Davis was a Kentucky clerk who was fired and jailed for refusing to hand out gay marriage licenses; she claimed she should not have to because it is against her Christian faith.  The Pope did not speak against Kim Davis, nor tell her what she did was wrong.  He thanked Kim Davis for her actions, and told her to stay strong for reinforcing her beliefs.  He also said that to be a “conscientious objector” such as this is a “human right”.

Pope Francis said, “It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right.”

This meeting has been written off by many, saying it was brief and not a special occurrence.  This means the Pope has not been following her case nor organizing the meetings with his supporters.  Also, a few days prior to this Pope Francis met with a gay former student of his whom he treated with the same respect that he did Davis.

Supermoon and Eclipse Awe Stargazers

For anyone who loves Astronomy, this is the biggest news ever— a lunar eclipse coupled with a “supermoon” began last Sunday, September 27.

A “supermoon” is a full moon that appears much larger than it usually is because it is at its perigree, the point at its orbit when it is closest to Earth. This phenomenon is so rare that it hasn’t appeared since 1982.

The Earth’s shadow started crossing the moon at 8:11 p.m. ET. The total eclipse began at 10:11 p.m. ET and peaked at 10:47 p.m. ET. The total eclipse lasted about 72 minutes.

Clearly, this event is worth celebrating for astronomers and stargazers. “It’s a beautiful sight in the nighttime sky,” said Mark Hammergren, an astronomer at Chicago’s Adler Planetarium. “It’s a way of connecting us to the universe at large. It gives us this view that there’s a bigger picture than just what we’re concerned with in our daily lives.”

Furthermore, this eclipse is enjoyable for the entire world—from most of the Americas to Greenland, Western Europe, Western Africa. Other parts of the world including  Western North America, the rest of Europe and Africa and a small area of Western Asia could see most of the sight except fading bites of the moon.

For such a big event, you could watch it anywhere. “You don’t have to be anyplace special. If you can see the moon, you can just look up,” said the Griffith’s curator, Laura Danly.

In all, this chance is totally unmissable. The next one isn’t due until 2033.

Why We Shouldn’t Stop Funding Planned Parenthood

0

Planned_Parenthood_logo.svgBy: Olivia King

Planned Parenthood is currently under the national spotlight; the question of whether or not to fund it has been the subject of heated debate in recent months.  Some people in this country, who have always been able to afford healthcare, have a problem with the federal funding of planned parenthood because of its abortion services. But here’s the thing: I know abortion is a sticky subject, and while I’m pro-choice and think it’s an important aspect of Planned Parenthood, the organization does so much more than that.

The federal government doesn’t even fund their abortions, which make up only 3% of their services overall. Which to be honest, a lot of people don’t seem to understand. Planned Parenthood provides healthcare for women who can’t afford it, saving lives through their breast cancer screenings, treatment for cervical cancer, and other services. An annual pap smear exam and results could cost up to $500 dollars for a woman without health insurance, but Planned Parenthood offers a discounted rate of $175. Many people simply cannot afford healthcare’s steep charges and Planned Parenthood offers services in abortion, birth control, emergency contraception, general health care, HIV testing, LGBT services, men’s health care, pregnancy testing and services, STD testings with treatments and vaccines, and women’s health care. Not only do they provide these services to men, women, and teens, but the Planned Parenthood Action website deals with things from Medicaid and sexual assault to healthcare for immigrants and birth control.

Planned Parenthood provides nonjudgmental legal, helpful, and affordable services for women, men, and teens, and yet they are only safe with funding until December 11th, 2015. Trying to shut it down because it provides abortion services is frankly ridiculous; it is clearly another attempt of men in government trying to tell women what to do with their bodies.

Even if you do not believe in abortion, even if you think it’s horrible and has to stop immediately, you cannot keep attacking Planned Parenthood. It’s more than just abortion- it’s healthcare many lower to middle class people depend on in this country to stay healthy. And yet, here we are anyway, debating if we should keep supporting an organization that is so important to so many people.

I have to ask myself why people are so opposed to Planned Parenthood, and all I can really come up with is the underlying layers of sexism and classism in this country. People have even gone as far as to obtain bits of audio from workers at Planned Parenthood and take them out of context to make the organization look bad. They also face scrutiny from people in regards to to why the President of Planned Parenthood is making so much money and why she can’t just use her salary to fund Planned Parenthood, which is ridiculous. She is the president of a huge organization and does good work for Planned Parenthood and their clients. Why shouldn’t she make money? Would she had been faced with the same question if she were a man? And why do some people have such a problem with the federal funding of an organization that helps people? My opinion is the same as before: sexism and classism are embedded in our culture. The people in this country who cannot see Planned Parenthood for what it is (a helpful, affordable alternative for healthcare for those who can’t afford it, because hey! Guess what! Not everyone can afford it!) need to take a step back and realize that not everyone America has the same privileges as they do and need organizations like Planned Parenthood to support them and their families.

House Speaker John Boehner Announces His Resignation

0

jbBy: Ananya Murthy

On Friday, September 25th, John Boehner (R-Ohio), Speaker of the House, announced his resignation from Congress. Conservatives were pressuring Boehner, a Republican, to take a harder line on their causes, most recently defunding Planned Parenthood as part of a package that would keep the government open. By resigning, Boehner has decreased the chances of yet another government shutdown. Boehner made it clear that the House will vote next week on a clean spending bill to keep the government open through mid-December while broader  negotiations on spending levels are held and then move on budget reconciliation legislation where both repealing the Affordable Care Act and stripping Planned Parenthood of funding will be considered.

Boehner’s main reason for resignation was this increasing pressure placed on him since the beginning of his time as House Speaker in 2010. Boehner has been pressured throughout his tenure to push for deeper spending cuts and more aggressive policy changes than were possible with President Obama in the White House. He seemed to decide that resigning, and leaving an exhausting position, was better than facing a humiliating fight within his own party. Additionally, he cites his meeting with Pope Francis, just the day before, as an event that spurred him on and gave him the confidence to leave. Many people were sad to see him go – although nearly none of them were Republicans.

Nancy Pelosi (D-Cal.), the Democratic leader in the House, called Boehner’s resignation “seismic for the House” and called it evidence of the far right’s “hijacking” of the Republican Party. “God knows what’s next over there,” she told staff members. Ms. Pelosi, who had been privately negotiating on a plan to keep the government open, told reporters that Mr. Boehner’s resignation was “a stark indication of the disarray of House Republicans.” She says she continues to negotiate directly with Boehner to achieve her goal of funding Planned Parenthood. President Barack Obama also commented on Boehner’s resignation, remarking that Boehner was a good man and a patriot, and that while their views differed Boehner had “always conducted himself with civility and courtesy with me.” Many other Democrats mourn Boehner’s decision, as he will most likely be replaced with a far more conservative member of the Republican party.

Some Republicans did support Boehner, like House Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), his party’s 2012 vice presidential nominee,  said Friday he didn’t want Boehner’s job. “This was an act of pure selflessness. John’s decades of service have helped move our country forward, and I deeply value his friendship,” Ryan said in a statement. Rep. Richard Nugent (R-Fla.) also applauded Boehner’s selflessness, saying “Obviously the pope had a big impact on him. That’s about the most selfless act I’ve sever seen, willing to step down to save this country and save this nation.” Others felt otherwise, like Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who implied that Boehner’s resignation was a chance for new, more powerful leadership. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) also criticized Boehner’s tenure, without mentioning him, by saying that “I have long called on Republican leadership to do something unusual, which is lead. Go actually stand up and honor the commitments that we made to the American people.”

It looks as if anyone could replace Boehner, although it seems that Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Cal.) is a frontrunner. He is much more receptive to the Tea Party members of the GOP compared to Boehner. Rep. John Boehner will officially leave his position as Speaker of the House at the end of October. We can only hope that his replacement will be as rational as he was.

FBLA’s Fall District Meeting

c_FBLA_color (1)By: Sarah Wie

Future Business Leaders of America, or “FBLA,” is the largest club at East with over a quarter of the school in the club and over a quarter of one million members all across America.  As a club dedicated to service, leadership, progress, and, of course, meeting new people, Williamsville East’s FBLA will be hosting the annual Fall District Meeting here at East on Monday, October 19.  Mr. Burakowski, the marketing director of 43 North (the world’s largest business competition here in Western New York) will be the keynote speaker for the evening.  Workshops ranging from How to Run for State Office to public speaking tips to fun ice-breaker activities will allow students from all over District 12 to network with each other and learn vital leadership and life skills.  On top of all this, there will be a dinner from Chipotle (and let’s be honest, who can resist a burrito?).  District Officers will also be announced. The applications for District Officer are available on Williamsville East’s FBLA Facebook page and will be posted on WITS shortly, along with an email sent to all FBLA members.  Make sure to drop by the Business Office and get a packet including the Chipotle order form and Code of Conduct; return those forms along with the $12 registration fee for a memorable and thrilling evening to kick off a new year with FBLA!

Not Taking the PSAT? Enjoy a Half Day!

0

psat By: Elizabeth Gu

For all the juniors out there and a handful of sophomores, Wednesday, October 28 is a date circled in red.  In other words, it’s PSAT Day.  For students that are taking the test, buses will be provided for transportation to school.  For the rest of the student body, buses will arrive four hours later than usual, which equates to a half day for most.  Those who are taking the test are less fortunate, sadly.  Those who aren’t, please enjoy those four hours to the fullest.  The test itself will be administered in the math and social studies areas at East.  As to why we can’t just take the day off like so many would hope, the board requires that we spend a certain amount of time in school, so the half day is a must.  For those who are also wondering why we couldn’t have a whole day and pull out the test-taking students instead, it’s because it would be difficult to administer the test and continue classes per usual.  To quote Mrs. DeSantis, “We couldn’t have a good testing site and have classes at the same time so it was the best option for students who are taking the test.”  And with that, juniors, sophomores, study hard and bring honor to your families!

Ways to Get Involved

0

eastlogo-redBy: Gillian Marcus

It’s that time of the year again.  Seniors stress about college applications, desperately wishing they got more volunteer hours and participated in more activities to get into their dream university.  Yet while some people get involved at East only for the résumé, clubs are supposed to be about having fun, meeting friends, and making your high school experience incredibly worthwhile.  After all, you’ll only experience it once.

Fortunately, Williamsville East offers a variety of ways to get involved in the form of clubs and sports.  More information about these activities can easily be found on the WITS home page.  One of the clubs East offers is Yearbook Club, where you help create East’s massive yearbooks.  Mrs. Kramer runs it; one example of what you can do is take pictures for it.  If you really enjoy language, why not join Spanish Club, French Club, or Latin Club?  Unity in Diversity is another club that is dedicated to appreciating and learning more about other cultures through dance, singing, and other creative endeavors.  Mr. Huber is the advisor.  Every year, Unity in Diversity holds an amazing show for the entire school to watch.

There’s also Book Club, where you read and discuss books together.  Carl Wilken, the only American to stay in Rwanda during the Rwandan genocide, is coming to speak at East on October 26. Book Club will be reading his book I’m Not Leaving.  If you’d like to gain more of a background on his life, Book Club is a great way to do that!  Lastly (yet certainly not least), there’s Newspaper Club, which is run by Mr. Huber and Mr. Maciejewski.  This club meets after school on Wednesdays.  It’s a great way to express your opinions and write fun articles for the East Newspaper.  In addition, Newspaper Club holds “coffee houses”, or fun shows at East that showcase the talent of students.  Fresh food is made and sold while various acts and performances take place.

If you have the dedication, you can also run for class office.  It’s a great way to support Williamsville East and brainstorm fun ideas to incorporate here.

If you want to do an activity on Thursday after school but you have a conflict since you’re in another club on Thursday, don’t fret!  You can talk to the advisors and alternate which club you go to each week.  You can also visit one club for fifteen minutes and then go the other one for fifteen minutes.

However, you can also get involved outside of school.  Amherst YES is a great way to sign up for various activities and help make a difference in the world.  You can volunteer at soup kitchens, libraries, and other places to help out.

It’s important to know that it’s never too late to join a club or activity.  Junior Nicole Kazmierczak says, “I wish I got involved earlier in my high school career.  I missed out on so much fun in all of the clubs I’ve recently joined!”  Even if it’s halfway through the year, and you feel it’ll be too “awkward” to join, clubs are always looking for new members.  It’s important to get involved, especially since we have so many magnificent opportunities here at East.   It’s a great way to make new friends who have the same interests as you, and the experience and memories you’ll end up making will be unforgettable.

NBA Preseason Begins

0

BasketballBy: Brian Suk

The NBA Preseason has begun, and whether you care about this meaningless time before the regular season or not, here’s what’s going down.

The Clippers beat the Nuggets 103 to 96 on Friday. Deandre Jordan led the way for the Clippers, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. He surprisingly also hit more than half of his free throws, going 3-5. Chris Paul also had 12 points and 9 assists.

On Saturday, the Pacers faced off against the Pelicans, with the Pelicans coming out victorious 110 to 105. The Pacers’ new implementation of small ball offense failed miserably, as they got absolutely hammered on the defensive end of the floor and were dominated on the boards. Paul George at Power Forward just simply didn’t work out, as he could not guard Anthony Davis. However, Paul George also had a great night with 18 points. The Pacers also had far too many turnovers with 19. Anthony Davis scored 18 for the Pelicans, along with Eric Gordon and Luke Babbitt scoring 16 a piece. Paul George had many complaints about the new offense and clearly wants no part of the 4 spot. He has said “I’ll talk to Frank and Larry about it. Maybe we can lean away from it.” The Hornets also played the Magic on Saturday, coming out victorious 106 to 100. Jeremy Lin stepped up, scoring a team high 17 points and 7 assists.

On Sunday, the Hornets beat the Heat 90-77, the Raptors beat the Clippers 94-73, and the Jazz beat the Lakers 90-71, in a game that featured the return of Kobe Bryant. He was obviously rusty, scoring just 5 points in 12 min, shooting 1-5 from the floor. His recovery will be slow, but it is yet to be seen whether he can stay on the court or not.

Although it is just preseason, we can already tell what teams need to improve on. The Pacers must sack their small ball offense, and go back to putting Paul George at the 3 with my recommendation of Jordan Hill at the 4 and Myles Turner at the 5 to start. Also, the Lakers need to stop relying on Kobe and get better.

The preseason gives us viewers a glimpse into what could be and it sure looks like one heck of a season is fast approaching.
