In a new school year, comes new teachers and the East Side News interviewed Ms. Lumb, Ms. Parrino, and Ms. Bedore to discuss their transition to East and how they plan to make this year a success.
Our first new teacher is Ms. Meredith Lumb, a 9th, 10th, and 11th grade English teacher. She taught at South for 14 years before moving to East. She is graduate of Niagara University and then received her masters at UB. She says the reason she became a teacher was to, “have a positive impact on young people.”
The best part of working at East, according to Ms. Lumb is the air conditioning, a quip at South’s lack of AC as a result of the building being constructed in 1950. “It is interesting working with and learning about kids’ lives and traditions and discovering how similar or different they are from my own,” said Lumb. Her goal for this year is to encompass literacy while still have discussions on real-world issues.
Outside of school she enjoys spending time with her family, she has three kids and she says whatever they are doing, she is right there with them.
Our second new teacher is Ms. Allison Parrino who teaches Algebra 1 and Pre-Calculus. She is a former teacher of St. Gregs and has received her education at UB. She became a teacher because she loves math, and enjoys helping kids learn math.
Her goal for the school year is, “to have all my kids pass the Regents exam.” The best part about being a teacher is her co-workers and the fact that the students really care a lot about their schoolwork. She enjoys spending time with her daughter when she is not in school.
Our third teacher is Ms. Dana Bedore, a Spanish teacher, she teaches 2R and 3A Spanish. She taught in Fairfield, CT for 7 years before moving to Buffalo. She received her BA from the Miami University of Ohio and then her masters at the Teachers College at Columbia University. She became a teacher because she loved going to school as a child and believes that her strong leadership skills combined with her passion and strength are what contributed to choosing a career as a teacher.
She says that the best part about teaching at East is, “How welcoming the teachers, staff, and students are. Also, the students are so motivated to do their best and that contributes to the enjoyment of my job because I get to learn new stuff.”
Her goal this year is to help students achieve their independent goals. Outside of school, she is the coach of the JV cheerleading team, and she enjoys skiing and cycling.
We wish these teachers all the best as they join the Williamsville East family, and hope that they achieve their goals, making the year successful.
