President Obama has declared the city of Flint, Michigan to be in a state of emergency due to lead contamination of the water supply.  The emergency declaration will allow for $5 million in federal funding.

The water was initially contaminated following a change in supplier in 2014.  Corrosive water allowed for the lead from old pipes to go into the water supply.  In October of 2015, tests of children’s blood revealed increased lead levels, as well as increased lead in water.  Exposure to lead can have developmental and behavioral repercussions in children.

Prior to testing, residents of Flint had complained about the water’s foul smell and discoloration, and also complained of headaches or rashes from using the water.

Governor Rick Snyder has been criticized for his method of handling this crisis, and many have called for his resignation.

Musical icon Cher has announced that she will donate around 180,000 bottles of water to Flint to help alleviate stress due to the crisis.
