Did You Say Takeout?
By Sarah Brunskill
Siri: According to my calculations either a burrito, pizza, or chinese food.
Since it isn’t safe to eat inside restaurants during quarantine, the way to support your local restaurant might be to do takeout. After sending out a survey about eating habits during the pandemic to the Williamsville East community, almost 50 students shared their experiences.
The results revealed that everyone has been affected differently, though almost equally in each regard. The largest percentage of students (38.8%) said that they haven’t really been affected since the beginning of Covid-19. Close behind at 30.6% each, one group of students feel that they have gotten more food since the beginning of the pandemic, and the other group said they ordered less food since the beginning of the pandemic.
Given these statistics. it would seem that restaurants would be serving the same amount of takeout as before the pandemic, but either that’s not the case or other issues are causing a drastic toll on the restaurant industry. According to the National Restaurant Association, “nearly 1 in 6 restaurants are closed permanently or long term as of September 14.” Restaurants that have remained open have had to make many major changes such as changing the interior of the restaurant so tables are at least 6 feet apart, wearing masks and taking new safety precautions to keep the employees and customers safe. The National Restaurant Association said they are “on track to lose 240 billion dollars this year.” That’s leaving a big dent in the food industry.
The Will East survey reveals about 60 percent (28/46) of students felt that Covid-19 has affected them enough to really notice how often and where they get takeout. and
Since delivery and takeout are the new “normal,” many Williamsville East students have recommended some of their favorite restaurants. Tacos and Burritos are very popular from LloydsChipotle, and Moes. Many students said they liked pizza from Pie-O-mine, Bocce, Dominos, and Santoras. Other restaurants that were mentioned include Mcdonalds, Fuji grill, Chef’s, Cheesecake Factory, Jonny C’s, La tolteca, and Eastern Pearl. While some had a favorite restaurant others said, “I don’t really care as long as I like it” or they just don’t go to restaurants very often. Some students were just winging it and said Duff’s Famous Wings.
The ability to get food from restaurants has totally changed since the beginning of the pandemic. Staying safe while still supporting the local businesses is very important. Getting delivery is one of the restaurant’s solutions.
Luckily the pandemic hasn’t put a halt to Williamsville East’s appetite, so try a new favorite and try out a new restaurant. Help out local restaurants to keep all of our favorites still open.
