On Thursday, October 1st, a C-130 plane crashed at Jalalabad airport in Afghanistan at around midnight local time.  Six of the 11 killed in the crash were of the US military.  The five others were civilian contractors.

The particular aircraft is generally used to carry heavy cargo and troops.  Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said their group shot down the plane on Twitter, however there is no proof that this actually occurred. The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

This crash has occurred at a time at which around 10,000 US troops are stationed in Afghanistan. There are plans to withdraw troops as of earlier in 2015, and President Obama as promised to keep only a small force at the US embassy in Afghanistan come the end of 2016.

Similar to this crash, an Indonesian military aircraft crashed in a part of Medan, in northern Indonesia.  Over 140 were killed in that crash.
