COVID-19 has taken our sports, our festivals and our everyday lives as we knew them. Surely it couldn’t get any worse, right? Wrong!
Due to coronavirus-related restrictions, the East Side Newspaper will no longer be meeting in room 204 until the foreseeable future. You know what that means – no bagels! How ever will we get our carbohydrate fix? We need that spike in blood sugar to carry us through the writing process of long and tedious articles. Fear not, for I have the solution!
These bagels taste just as delicious as the ones you’ll find the editors and writers scuffling over like a pack of hyenas in room 204. Super easy to make, they require only 5 ingredients and 20 minutes, and clock in at only 240 calories each. Soft, flavorful, and versatile, these bagels taste just as great with either sweet or savoury toppings.
Ingredients
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 12cups of plain Greek yogurt
- 3 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. sea salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- Toppings or seasonings, such as seeds (optional)
Method
- Preheat your oven to 375 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine your flour, baking powder, salt, and yogurt and mix until a dough forms. Turn out your dough onto a lightly floured work surface, and knead for 1-2 minutes or until no longer sticky.
- Divide your dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each section into a rope, and pinch the ends together to form a circle.
- Place onto your prepared baking sheet. Brush the egg wash over the tops of the bagels and cover with your toppings. Place them into the oven, and bake them for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Bagels are such an adventurous food; not quite a donut, but not quite a loaf, they have numerous varieties you can try!
Experiment with toppings – if you’re looking for something a little more exciting than the traditional seed mix, try topping your bagels with minced garlic and sea salt. If you have a sweet tooth, coat the surface of your bagels with cinnamon sugar for a churro-like flavor. If you like something a little spicier, top your bagels with red pepper flakes and minced jalapenos.
Make it a sandwich – sandwich toppings like deli meat, mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato are delicious inside of a bagel.
Breakfast Bagel – add eggs, bacon, cheese, sausage and whatever else you enjoy in a fry-up for a morning boost.
Try a flavored cream cheese – make your own or buy it pre-prepared. Browse your local dairy aisle for some interesting cream cheese flavors.
Or try a flavored Greek yogurt – for a more ingrained flavor, try a flavored Greek yogurt in the dough. Fruity flavors are phenomenal!
Have fun with the shape – you could make your classic circular bagel, or you could try making Snagels! These bagels are shaped like snails and are perfect for sharing with children (if the children are willing to share). Once you roll out your dough, connect one end to the middle of the bagel. Make a small incision on the other end for the antenna. Poke or slice in two eyes and a smile and bake.
