Democratic Presidential Candidates in the Mix

The next presidential election will occur in 2016 as will the Democrat primary. Numerous politicians have a chance to make it 12 straight years in the white house for the Democrat party. Hillary Clinton is the clear favorite of the Democrat party. The former secretary of state has said that she hasn’t yet made the decision on whether to run for the presidency in 2016. Hillary has the most name recognition of any of the Democratic candidates and her approval rating is currently very high. She came in second to Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary and she held her own in most of the debates.

Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts senator since 2012, is another female possibility. She has said over and over again that she will not run for the presidency. Warren has a long history of fighting against big business and “the insider nature of Washington.”

Democrat Julian Castro is another potential presidential candidate. Castro opposes strict immigration laws. He has served as the mayor of San Antonio since 2009. He was the first ever Hispanic keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention.

Vice President Joe Biden will probably run. He would be 74 at the time of the election. Biden has a clear advantage as the current VP. Much of his chance at the presidency depends on the final approval rating of Obama. Biden has been a fixture in Washington since 1972. He’s run for president twice before.

New York State governor Andrew Cuomo is the most moderate candidate in the field. He has increased gun control and allowed gay marriage, but also fought against unions to reduce the government budget. Cuomo served as the secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Clinton administration.

Maryland governor Martin O’Malley has clearly stated that he will run in 2016. He is the finance chairman of the Democratic Governors Association which keeps him connected to the big money of the Democratic party. As governor Martin has legalized gay marriage and allowed illegal immigrants to go to college.

Mark Warner was considered one of the top prospects in the 2008 election. Warner is a former Virginian governor and senator. Warner pulled out of the 2008 race, citing family concerns, but in 2016 he will be back again.

The field for 2016 is still very open. Eight years after America elected it’s first black president, the Democratic party could provide it with its first woman or Hispanic president.
