With the growing audience for superhero movies, more characters buried in comics will be put on the big screen for all to see. Such is the case with Deadpool who, despite appearing in several video games, has flown under the radar. That is, until Marvel Entertainment announced the production of a Deadpool movie, slated to be released on February 12th. Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds), is diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is offered an “alternative treatment option,” which ends up scarring his body and mind, leaving him with accelerated healing powers and a twisted sense of humor. He then goes out to find the man who did this to him and take revenge. This seemingly generic plot is made more complicated and entertaining by Deadpool’s unique sense of humor. Deadpool is called “the merc with the mouth” for a reason; he is almost always spouting crude, innuendo-packed one liners. This is what causes the Deadpool movie to stand apart from the competition.
Parents have taken offense to the movie’s crudeness, saying it betrays the main audience of superhero movies, children.. However, the movie’s interpretation of Deadpool seems to be true to the comics. Comic books have been around for a long time, and fans who spent their childhoods reading these comic books have now grown up; this plays right into their more mature tastes. However, the movie has been banned in China due to its crude nature.
Deadpool looks to be a satirical and entertaining film, mocking the genre while also playing to its strengths, something fans have been asking for for a long time.
