Japan Releases Nuclear Wastewater
The Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan was approved for a plan of gradually releasing wastewater into the ocean for what is predicted to be a span of around 30 years. With the go-ahead from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Japan has had its first release of wastewater, with three more installments to go, this plan is estimated to conclude in March 2024.Â
The Supreme Court Overrules Affirmative Action
On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court made a landmark decision overruling affirmative action in the case Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard. It was declared that considering race in college admissions was unconstitutional and could no longer be done, specifically denying Harvard University and the University of South Carolina’s admissions offices the right to practice it while also setting a nation-wide precedent. This ruling has reversed decades of decisions in favor of it.

What to Know About the Willow Project and its Controversy
The Biden administration approved the Willow Oil Project on March 13, sparking massive controversy over its climate impacts. This is the largest oil extraction project ever proposed in the United States, with an $8 Billion cost by oil giant ConocoPhillips. The drilling will be done on Alaska’s North Shore, which until now was the largest single expanse of untouched land in the United States.
