As the Fall Concert Season continues, East’s band program performed on October 25th at 7:15 pm. After two months of hard work and hours of dedication, more than 80 students put on a phenomenal show that left the audience stunned. Music flowed throughout the auditorium from one piece to the next, varying with intensity, dynamics, and energy. With the help of Mr. Brendan Lanighan and Mr. Thomas McCluskey, East’s talented band students displayed a memorable and vibrant performance.

With only two months and eight songs to be performed, the hard work and preparation these students put forth is incredible and only goes to show their appreciation and devotion for music. Confidence is key to having a well-executed performance, and it is safe to say that these students were well-prepared: “I think we will do amazing no matter what happens. The bands have prepared countless hours and we are confident that they will pay off. They are such an amazing group of students; the combined energy of a diverse group of instruments is so nice to hear.”

The Concert Band performed first and started the night off with “Fanfare for Flight,” composed by Adrian B. Sims; it had a marching style rhythm, which was vibrant and defining. “In the Shining of Stars,” penned by Robert Sheldon, had different dynamics that aided the harmonious flow of the music and its impact on the audience. “Fiero” was performed next, and the works of Steve Hodges completely flipped the calm, serene atmosphere that preceded it with one that was fast-paced and intense. Concert Band concluded their show with “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” arranged by Carmen Dragon, which had a perfect combination of all the previous songs, with elements of tranquility, authority, and intensity.

Wind Ensemble concluded the performance in the auditorium and played “October” by Eric Whitacre, “Courtly Airs and Dances” composed by Ron Nelson, and “Salvation is Created,” penned by Pavel Chesnekov. In retrospect to Concert Band, the music performed had a delicate, peaceful character, and followed more of an “autumnal feel.” Aside from the pieces, Wind Ensemble also displayed their commitment to this performance. The members of the male soccer team rushed back after their game to make it to this concert and nonetheless, it was chaotic: “It was extreme–considering the outcome of the game, it was pretty emotional. We had to sprint back to the concert, get our instruments and be in concert dress while our group was already onstage, but I’m glad we were able to make it.” The Wind Ensemble added a very unique twist to this year’s concert, as students memorized a piece and played it within the crowd; “It was so cool how they stood and played in the audience, you could really feel surrounded by that music.”

As the audience was leaving, Jazz Ensemble performed “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be” composed by Duke Ellington in the commons, and for many, was favored: “Jazz Ensemble played wonderfully, they were my absolute favorite and I was definitely not expecting it!” 18 skilled students that are devoted and dedicated to this style of music put on a spectacular show, including soloists Ty Chang on guitar and Brennan Beecher playing alto sax. “Jazz Ensemble’s performance was incredible; there was a good audience, the soloists were amazing, and it was so different in such a good way. They were the takeaway from that night and I’m glad I stayed to hear them.” As you can see, these students put on a fantastic performance, and East cannot wait to see what else you have in store for us.
