If you are easily depressed by watching the miserable lives of three orphans, then as the theme song of the show tells you, just look away and watch another show with superheroes, strange things, or colorful ponies. But if you don’t mind such depressing events, let us begin the review.
Based on the book series of the same name by Lemony Snicket, A Series of Unfortunate Events follows the unfortunate lives of orphans Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire after their parents perished in a fire, while trying to escape from Count Olaf, a dastardly villain with scheme to steal their fortune.
A Series of Unfortunate Events has gotten of to a great start thanks to a very engaging story that follows the first 4 books in its total 8 episodes very well. The show, while sometimes sad, can at times deliver some very clever and funny jokes. And the unforgettable characters are the cherry on top for what make this show great thanks the very talented cast. With notable performance like Neil Patrick Harris as the villainous Count Olaf, Malina Weissman as the inventive Violet, Louis Hynes as the bookwork Klaus, Presley Smith as biter Sunny, K. Todd Freeman as the humble but unhelpful Mr. Poe, Cobie Smulders and Will Arnett as the mother and father, and especially Patrick Warburton as the mysterious narrator Lemony Snicket, really help bring these characters to life.
Overall, A Series of Unfortunate Events is a fantastic show that is definitely worth getting a Netflix subscription to check out. Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, has confirmed that both Season 2 and Season 3 are currently in production to adapt the remaining nine books in the series. I’m going to give A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 1 a 10/10 with the Edward’s Seal of Approval and my highest recommendation.
