Advice: Ask Steph

I’m so bad at packing before I travel, do you have any tips to stay organized and relieve the stress of traveling?

Personally, I don’t travel very often, but I know that a lot of people do. I would think of it like staying organized for school. You have a specific binder or folder for each class; have a specific section in your suitcase or bag for each item you need. I would also suggest making a list of the things you will need.

I have a hard time falling asleep at night, how can I fall asleep faster and not end up staying awake till 3 am?

Typically if you can’t fall asleep at night it means you have something on your mind. Try to clear your head as difficult as that may sound. Listen to music, drink tea, do whatever you have to do to relax. If worst comes to worst, count sheep.

My parents cancelled Netflix, how do I cope?

You could either watch seasons of certain shows that are on television right now, or record episodes if you don’t have time to watch them during the week. If all else fails, beg for them to get it back.

Do you have any suggestions for spring break traveling? I’m trying to convince my parents to take my friends.

You could suggest going on a road trip with your friends, or tell your parents that all your friends would pay for their own plane tickets if necessary.

Frightful Week for Football

0

By Omkar Pratapwar

On October 2nd, high school football player Tom Cutinella died. His school’s officials do not know the official cause of death, and it won’t be announced publicly, but they say that the team executed a “typical” play before he collapsed on the field.

Cutinella was the third death on the football field that week. Just 6 days earlier, 17 year-old Demario Harris from Alabama also was reported dead while playing football. Harris’s coach reported that Harris had a brain aneurysm, but the official cause of death is still not known. However, Harris’s father posted on Facebook that Harris suffered a brain hemorrhage “that was caused by a hit he took during Friday’s game”. Harris’s father believes that Demario may have had a pre-existing condition, but there is no way to tell now. Also on the field, a North Carolina high schooler, Isaiah Langston, collapsed on the field before his team’s game just one week before Cutinella died.

More than 1 million kids play high school football across the country, and fatalities related to the sport remain “rare”, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research at UNC. Death rates in the sport have declined, according to the Center, but when they happen, they occur primarily at the high school level. There were eight fatalities related directly to football in 2013, according to NCCSIR, and all were high school players. That was the highest total in more than a decade.

Despite advancements in technology, equipment, and gear, the occurrence of deaths in football seems to be a constant. According to the Youth Sports Safety Alliance, high school players suffer 3 times as many catastrophic injuries, permanent disability injuries, such as fractured necks or serious head injuries, and also temporary paralysis, heat stroke, or cardiac arrest than players at the college level.

There is no doubt that certain parents will want out when it comes to their kids playing football or any sport for that matter. But the truth is these deaths are rare, and the likely case is that these kids had some sort of a prior condition or these incidents were just flukes. In the end, football isn’t going to stop in America. we just need to be more careful.

Seahawks Trade Percy Harvin

0

By Will Zhang

On October 19th, former Seahawks wide receiver Percy Harvin was traded to the New York Jets for a conditional pick between the 2nd and 4th round. This trade shocked NFL fans across the nation. When news of the trade broke, everyone was wondering why. Why would the reigning Super Bowl champion trade away their top wide receiver and arguably the most explosive players on the entire team? Harvin gave the Seahawks a 29-0 lead at halftime after a kickoff return for a touchdown during the last super bowl.

The most shocking part of this trade was the value the Seattle Seahawks got in return: a conditional 2nd to 4th round pick. A conditional pick is essentially a draft pick in the next draft, and the Seahawks will receive a pick based on Harvin’s performance in New York. Sources close to the Seahawks organization have said the reason they traded Harvin was due to chemistry issues that Harvin caused in the locker room. Harvin was apparently involved in numerous arguments between fellow teammates. On one occasion before last year’s super bowl, Harvin and former Seahawks receiver Golden Tate were involved in a fight. These incidents were reason why the Seahawks were so willing to give up a player of his caliber so easily. The situation was so bad that if the trade between the Seahawks and the Jets was not approved by the NFL, the Seahawks were going to drop the him.

I think this is a bad trade for the Seahawks. They are losing a big playmaker downfield. Harvin was know for explosive runs after the catch. These traits may help benefit the struggling 1-6 Jets who had major issues in the passing game on offense. This addition should help second year quarterback Geno Smith who has struggled this year find receivers, throwing 7 interceptions and a mere 181 yards a game.

In their first game without Harvin, the reigning Super Bowl champion faced the St. Louis Rams. Their offense was humming lead by quarterback Russell Wilson throwing for over 300 yards, 2 touchdowns, and rushing for over 100 yards and another touchdown. Form this one game the offense seems unaffected so far with the absence of Harvin. Receiver Doug Baldwin had a big day filling in for the departed Harvin. Despite this effort the Rams were able to steal a victory due to a big performance by their special team.

It should be interesting to see the impact this trade has on both teams. I doubt this trade will help the Jets this season as they have dug themselves too deep of a hole to climb out, but this trade could end up hurting the Seahawks offensively.

“The Steve Nash Dilemma”

It’s happening again. Steve Nash’s seemingly never-ending string of injuries. The 2x mvp, 8x All Star, and 7x All-NBA selection player has now been withered down to a 40 year-old man who struggles to stay on the court. These last couple of years have been a nightmare for Steve Nash. He’s been fighting injuries and absorbing criticism from fans nonstop. First was his year with Kobe and Dwight Howard on the Lakers. Everyone expected this team to be a powerhouse. But the team turned out to be a bust, and Steve Nash was consecutively on and off the court with injuries. He missed the entire season after that, and tried to play some soccer instead. The next season , he almost missed the entire season again playing only a couple of games because of back problems. He was unable to play a full week of games. He stated that his problem was that he could still be productive in games, he just couldn’t do it in practice. Everyone thought that this season would be his bounce back season. But after hurting his back trying to carry bags (yes), he was reported to be out for the full season with nerve damage in his back. So the real question is: should he retire?

Steve Nash has officially become nothing but a money-eater. For the past couple of seasons all he’s done is hurt himself and continue to assure fans that he would be back only to fall victim to father time again and again. The contract the Lakers gave him was a gamble, one that the Lakers thought would work during the season with Kobe and Dwight. They lost that gamble and are now stuck with this 40-year old who can’t play. This is definitely not the fault of Steve Nash. He is a future Hall of Famer who is 40 years old. Of course he can’t play anymore. What annoys me is his constant negligence to the fact that his career is over. He continues to hurt the Lakers organization with his stubbornness. He is not only hurting his own body, but he is preventing the Lakers from giving the full time job to Jeremy Lin, their new point guard. I think it would be best if Steve Nash retired. For the sake of himself, the Lakers, Jeremy Lin, and the fans, Steve Nash needs to face reality, deal with the fact that he is 40, and move on. He could easily find a great job after his playing years. He is definitely a smart guy with his uncanny passing abilities and his unbelievable court vision. I feel like he could become a good coach or analyst.

The era of Steve Nash was over long ago. The sharpshooting, play making, highlight reel, and passing maestro himself his long gone. Age has caught up with him, and he is feeling the wearand tear of it on his body. Thanks for all the memories Steve Nash, and I hope you choose to retire for the good of everybody.

A Legend Retires: Thierry Henry

By Omkar PratapwarTheirry-Henry-in-action-o-007

For many years, teams have feared the power and accuracy of Thierry Henry. The French striker began his career at his hometown club and bounced around until he began his senior career at Monaco. He has become one of the most awarded, and recognizable faces in soccer today. In total, Henry has scored over 350 goals in his entire senior career. He remained at Monaco for 5 seasons before transferring to Juventus in 1999, and made the switch then to Arsenal.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger knew Henry from their times at Monaco. Wenger was the manager there and witnessed first-hand how explosive Henry could be. Henry scored 20 goals as a starter at Monaco, and moved to Juventus, before moving to Arsenal like his former manager. Henry terrorized BPL defenses from 1999-2007, and along with now-Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, helped win the BPL title twice, the FA Community Shield twice, and the FA Cup three times. If you ask an Arsenal fan who is in their list of top ten players that have played for Arsenal, I can assure you that Henry will be on that list. Henry scored an impressive 226 times for the Gunners, and was the primary choice for free-kicks and penalties.

Henry would eventually move on to Barcelona, where he maintained his statement that “I always said that if I ever left Arsenal it would be to play for Barcelona”. Henry surprisingly had a great season despite playing in a tough spot on the wing. Although, he fell victim to an expected major decrease in scoring, he still outscored Messi and was the team’s leading scorer in his first year in 2007. Henry would stay there until 2010 when he made 80 appearances and scored 35 goals.

Thierry Henry’s career took him in a whole different direction as he signed for the newly formed club, the New York Red Bulls. Henry became one of the team’s marquee signings and one of the league’s highest paid players. The Red Bulls essentially started from the bottom and quickly rose to become one of the most well-known and best teams in Major League Soccer. Henry re-earned his reputation as a dangerous scorer in the MLS, and has become one of the league’s most popular stars. Henry has starred 4 times in the MLS all-star game, a friendly between an all-star MLS team and a top European team. Henry has still yet one more chance to exit in style by making some classic Henry magic happen in the play-offs, but like Landon Donovan, a special moment for Henry may not happen.

Henry has not only been a legend for his club, but also his country. France has greatly benefited from Henry. He is the all-time leading scorer for the French and is in the top 5 for assists. Henry has played with many of the French greats such as: Zinedine Zidane, Marcell Desailly, Didier Deschamps, and Patrice Vieira. Henry has not struggled to make his mark on the French National Team. Henry was a World Cup winner in 1998, and decided to call it quits after a poor overall and individual outing from the French and Henry in the 2010 world cup in South Africa.

Henry is a highly decorated and a highly talented soccer player and will forever be engrained in the history books as a superstar for club and country. He has earned such accolades such as World Cup champion, The Golden boot, he was named to the English Football Hall of Fame, and he was also listed in Pele’s list of 125 all-time greatest players. However Henry has faltered in recent years, and is somewhat ending his career in opposite fashion than Landon Donovan. Henry is calling it quits after his struggles, but Donovan is playing club soccer in his prime. Nevertheless, Henry will forever be immortalized as a Legend.

The Meaning of the Death of Oscar De La Renta

By Madison HuntingtonAP 2014 MET MUSEUM COSTUME INSTITUTE BENEFIT GALA A ENT USA NY

The death of Oscar De La Renta was not just devastating, it was an end of an era; an end of inspiration and opportunity. Mr. De La Renta expressed his talents from dressing Jackie Kennedyto Sarah Jessica Parker along with other inspirational women with a well known name. Oscar De La Renta first wanted to be anabstract artist. When he found his talent and passion in design, he could not be stopped. He claimed he had  “a romance with color” which was evident in everything he designed. Mr. De La Renta taught young women how to be ladies. He said “Elegance is a discipline of life.” He watched and taught young women such as Karlie Kloss become a beautiful classy woman instead of just being a pretty model with long legs and a poor attitude. “The world lost one of the most extraordinary people that i have ever met. Thank you for helping me become the woman I am today and for always inspiring me to be better. there simply is no one else like you.” said by Karlie Kloss. Oscar De La Renta believed in women having power over themselves and holding themselves in composure. “Walk like you have 3 men behind you” he said. He wanted women to not just have a pretty face; he wanted a woman to feel confident in herself and with an attitude to draw people in.

Oscar De La Renta believed that everyone is in charge of their own destiny. He once said “Things never happen on accident. They happen because you have a vision, you have a commitment, you have a dream.” He was originally from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. He was hardworking and proved that you can become what you want to be no matter the circumstances. All the way from Punta Cana came a man who changed fashion forever. Model Coco Rocha said “Today fashion lost one of the greatest couturiers of the last century. I’m forever grateful to have had the chance to wear his creations and ill always remember Mr. De La Renta as a gentleman and a class act. Oscar was never afraid to speak his mind or share his point of view- whether that be on the runway or on the written page. he was a pillar of New York fashion and will be sorely missed.”

Mr. De La Renta did not only influence those sitting at the front row of his shows. He has influenced the creative driven students of Williamsville East High School. As many of us who plan to find a career in fashion we have studied him and found inspiration in him.  The “Gentleman of fashion,” said by Naomi Campbell, has left us to take what we have learned from him and interpret it in our own ways. On October 20, 2014, we lost an iconic man. “We live in an era of globalization and the era of the women. Never in the history of the world have women been more in control of their destiny.” His words and inspiration will always be a basis for any designer.

Joe and Teresa Giudice Sentenced to Jail

By Lauren WallenfelsTeresa And Joe Giudice Court Appearance

The Giudice’s financial issues have been an issue ever since they filed for bankruptcy back in 2009. In July of 2013 they couple were charged a with 39-count indictment and later charged withtwo more. Joe, 43 and Teresa, 42, continued to plea quilty to wire fraud, conspiracy to commit mail, and tax fraud. Joe also pleaded guilty to tax invasion last March. Their original court date was set for July but got pushed back to September.

Their court date was highly anticipated. Their judge was U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas. On their September 29th court date they finally found out their charges. Joe was charged with 41 months in jail and the possibility of deportation back to Italy. Teresa was charged with 15 months in jail. As far as their charges, Judge Salas took a fair approach, considering the couples four daughters, Gia, 13, Gabriella, 9, Malania, 8, and Audriana, 5. In fairness to the couple, Judge Salas ordered Teresa to serve her jail time first, while Joe stays home with the children, and when Teresa gets out Joe will begin serving his jail time. The judge even postponed Teresa’s jail time start date so that they could spend the holidays as a family.

The Giudice’s financial issues were looked into specifically from 2009-201, as that was during the time that most of their crimes were committed. They had a total of undisclosed assets of $1 million. They also claimed that there houses contents were only worth $25,000 when in actuality they were worth $1 million. Teresa falsely claimed that she was employed in a mortgage application, but was actually unemployed from 2001 to 2008. In 2004,Joe failed to file a tax return. He also cheated the government out of almost $250,000 by failing to report $1 million between the years of 2000 to 2008. This caused them to owe close to $425,000 in restitution. Teresa has already paid half of her restitution.

Since their court date the couple has been trying to hold it together for their children. They placed their mansion for $3.99 million when it was previously bought for $530,000 back in 2002. They also placed their beach house for sale. Teresa commented on her charges by saying, “I fully take responsibility for my actions,” in a letter she wrote and read in court. Joe said, “I stand here humiliated before the court, my family, and society. I disgraced many people, including my wife and four daughters. I take full responsibility for my actions and promise to be a better person.” Judge Salas said, “What you did in this case doesn’t define you as a man,” in response to his comment. The couple placed themselves in an unfortunate position. The best thing for the couple to do at this point is lay low, so that when all of this is over in a little less than five years they can resume to “normalcy” whatever that may be for them. We wish the couple nothing but the best in their future endeavors and hopefully this will all die down soon enough.

TV Review: The Walking Dead *Spoiler Alert*

By Eisa Hashmi-97ccf1d1-0af1-444b-b35e-11e9db43314f

The Walking Dead, love it or hate it, has returned. The polarizing show has come back with a season premier to satisfy die hard fans as well as regular TV watchers.  Full of action, suspense, and drama that we actually care about, “No Sanctuary” proves that season six will be one of the best.

We return at Terminus, the sanctuary that proves to be anything but. On the last episode of season five, we have Rick and the group being imprisoned by the people of Terminus. He rejoins with Maggie and Glenn as well as a few new faces and delivers that epic line, “They’re screwing with the wrong people,” to hint that they will fight back against the potentially cannibalistic people of Terminus.

The opening of episode 501, “No Sanctuary,” answers many questions that season five left for the audience such as where is Carol, how will they get out of this, and are the Terminites really cannibals? We open on the group locked in a train car making makeshift weapons out of belt buckles, pieces of wood, and other random pieces of clothing and gear that is still left on them.

Glenn, Rick, Bob, and Daryl along with three other random survivors were taken to a room where the season’s first amazing visual effects were shown.

After the haunting display of gore, we are treated to a thirty minute action sequence involving explosions, gunfire, and of course zombies. It is here where we see Executive Producer, Greg Nicotero’s visual effects talent shine with some of the best zombie kills ever put to TV or film.

Episode one of season six was an explosive and exciting start to the sixth season of The Walking Dead. “No Sanctuary,” proves that season six will be a more action packed and exciting season with little to no boring and unnecessary exposition.

Top 10 Non-Scary Halloween Movies

by Emma Valenzanightmarebeforexmas

It’s that time of the year again, where all coffee shops advertise their“Pumpkin Spice” flavored everything, and the trees start the iconic ritual of shedding their now orange, red and yellow leaves. It’s also that time of year when Buffalo starts to become that frigid place we all know and love, marking the end of the warm weather that we won’t see again until April of next year. The biggest part of the month of October however, is Halloween. The 31st is a day that both children and adults alike look forward to each year, from the candy and costumes, to the Halloween parties and decorations, most everyone can find something to love about Halloween. Some of the best parts about Halloween are the movies that stem from the holiday, most being horror and gore filled. Though mostly entertaining, horror movies can get old after a while, so it’s always nice to sit back and watch a movie where someone isn’t running somewhere they shouldn’t be every two seconds. For those of us horror fans who need a break, and for those who run in fear when even the word “horror” is mentioned, here is a list of ten not-so-scary Halloween movies to get you in the mood for this spooky and fun filled holiday.

Once in the forest, he practices his vows in front of a tree and puts his soon-to-be-wife’s ring on a gnarled branch sticking out of the ground, which turns out to be a dead woman’s finger. The woman rises from the grave and assumes that they are now married, whisking him away to the land of the dead. The Corpse Bride is a creepy, heartwarming tale full of music, fun, and almost everything in between to get you ready for Halloween.

When he tries to claim her for his own, however, Jim and his children must save his wife from Mr. Gracey and his faithful butler Ramsley. Modeled after the well-known ride in Disney World, the creepiness of the manor and the humor which the actors bring to the table, as well as the interesting plot make this an excellent movie for Halloween.

Frakenweenie (2012)
After Victor’s dog Sparky unexpectedly dies, Victor harnesses the power of lightning in order to bring his animal friend back to life. When the town finds out, they’re whipped into a frenzy, causing Victor to face unintended and monstrous consequences. The strange and creepy family welcomes Fester into their household, but soon grows suspicious that he doesn’t seem to remember anything from his past with his brother Gomez. The dark humor and creepiness of all the characters makes this film perfect for Halloween.

One day when he and his friend Chowder are playing basketball and the ball lands in Nebbercracker’s yard, they soon find out that the house is a living and breathing monster and it’s up to them to find out how to destroy it. The beautiful animation, coupled with the amazing plot is what makes this movie special and a favorite for Halloween.

Coraline (2005)

In the new world, she finds alternate versions of her parents and neighbors, who have all flipped drastically in personality and mannerisms compared to their real-world selves. They all look almost exactly the same as their real-world models except for one thing: they all have button eyes. This story is not for the faint of heart, and though it’s on this list, it still has its pretty creepy moments that will have you hiding under your safety blanket. Nevertheless, its colorful animation and storyline, as well as its fun yet sometimes deceiving characters make it a must watch for Halloween!

Hotel Transylvania (2012)
Count Dracula, who operates a hotel and high-end resort for monsters in his castle far away from the human world, goes into bat-crazy mode when a human named Jonathan stumbles upon his hotel and develops a huge crush on his daughter, Mavis. He does not, however, tell Mavis or anyone else that he’s a human in order to keep all of the monsters in the hotel from freaking out, making him come off as unnecessarily mean as he tries to get the boy to leave. Its cast of funny monsters and colorful animation make it a gem of a movie, and something perfect to watch for Halloween.

ISIS Recruiting New Members

By Claire Kim

recruitsThe name ISIS should be familiar to many, considering how it has dominated a good portion of the media for some time. Short for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, it has since changed its name again to simply IS, Islamic State, and will be referred to as such for the rest of the article.

IS has had a fairly short rise to infamy. It first attracted world-wide attention in February, when it was cut off from Al-Qaeda for its brutality and “notorious intractability”; since then, it has had an almost meteoric rise in membership. This increase in members surprisingly consists of a great deal of Westerners–the majority from Arab countries, but also recruits from the EU, US, Canada, and Australia.

ISIS’s recruiting tactics are surprisingly modern and up-to-date. Using a blend of social media, such as Instagram and Twitter, they use a constantly changing number of accounts to describe and depict their life as jihads.

ISIS is particularly welcoming to foreign fighters, even if they don’t speak Arabic, or don’t have military training. Westerners can simply arrive one day, ask for a gun, and get one. Simple.

The jihadists are fairly dedicated to their media, which has a huge sway in attracting fresh recruits. Using sites such as ask.fm and Kik, among others, Western fighters can answer questions that potential recruits have. For the most part, the life they portray is warm and important, to sway the indecisive to joining their cause. However, these online identities can also be brutal and horrifying. Pictures of cats and sunsets can just as easily be followed with, say, a pyramid of severed heads.
