America’s Bread and Circuses

Bread and Circus

The presidential election process in this country has turned into a circus. We parade candidates around stages and stadiums, indulge in the latest meaningless scandals and controversies about each candidate, and watch them attack and harass each other personally with an amount of glee only comparable to that of Roman citizens as they paid to see this week’s slave get chewed up in a den of lions. For many, the presidential elections have turned into modern day bread and circuses; a popularity contest that distracts us from the real issues facing this nation.

I have no reservations about unapologetically disclosing my own hypocrisy, and this article will be no exception: while condemning the election process for its reality-show-like nature, I must admit it is an entirely necessary part of the process. The office of President of the United States is arguably the most powerful position a human being can hold, and as such there is no doubt the person holding it has an incredible amount of responsibility to all the people of the world when making the extremely influential decisions that come his or her way every day in the Oval Office. For this reason, we must be wary of allowing the process by which that office is filled to be decided by a contest where clowns with fringe viewpoints snag all attention and legitimate candidates get ignored in the meantime.

That being said, we would be remiss if we forgot that the president’s office exists to represent the American people, and the reality is that before this election cycle, it appeared that the American people were not too interested in this representation. Politics is a dull subject for many Americans- dull enough that the United States is behind almost every single developed country in terms of voter turnout. A May 2015 Pew Research poll found that only 53% of registered voters actually voted in the 2014 midterm elections, down from a still not impressive 61.8% turnout for the 2012 presidential election. Compared with many other European countries like Sweden with an 86% turnout and Belgium with 87%, the system in this country is doing something wrong when motivating the population to vote.

And which portion of the population is voting the least? Surely it must be middle-aged people, too cynical about the future of the country to care about what happens to it, right? Or elderly people, who would rather leave the decision of this country’s future to the “young folk” that will inhabit it for many years to come. No. In fact, according to the United States Census Bureau, in 2014 a staggeringly low 38 percent of eligible voters aged 18 to 24 voted in the mid terms. Put simply, it is the youth of this nation, those that have the most to gain or lose at each election, that do not care about who is representing them in the government.

This election cycle has started earlier than many election cycles before it, and there are an unprecedented number of candidates in the running, especially for the Republican nomination. Going back to the bread and circuses parallel, it is as if the circus upgraded its shows from a measly five-way battle between the regular ensemble of gladiators and lions to an all out war involving pyrotechnics, monster trucks, and inexplicable additions like a whole colony of orangutans added to the mix. Except, of course, in the presidential race, there are very few pyrotechnics and monster trucks, the all out war mostly involves a lot of middle aged-to-elderly people insulting each other, and there is only one orangutan-like creature participating—and trust him, he’s really, really rich.

I bet you chuckled a little bit while reading that barely disguised jab at Donald Trump, and that demonstrates the exact reason that, ridiculous though they might be, the bread and circuses-like attraction of the elections is entirely necessary. The truth is, the ridiculous display that is on television and the internet every night is getting people excited for the election. If the easily distracted youth of this nation find the need to vote in 2016 because this especially vicious cycle of elections has brought certain issues to their attention, in my mind the bread and circuses is benefitting the entire nation by indirectly increasing representation.

So while some of those that care about politics slam their heads against brick walls every time we see a quote from Donald Trump insulting a whole race of people, or Ben Carson supporting the values of this week’s medieval philosophy, I will thank the attention seekers that seemingly poison the office we rely on to make world-altering decisions. Because for all of the ignorance they espouse, there is a stronger force that counters it: the attention of the public.

Floods Threaten South Carolina

Ever since October 1st, South Carolina has been in a state of emergency due to the impact of Hurricane Joaquin. The coastal cities have been buried under several feet of water. The majority of the rain has ended, yet the flooding has remained. Already at least fifteen people have died, and the death count is slowly rising.

On Wednesday, October 7, 2015, Columbia citizens were told to evacuate their homes due to a dam breakage. Millions of gallons of water was expected to pour into the city. “Move to higher ground. Act quickly to protect your life,” said The National Weather Service in an alert sent out to the area. University of South Carolina has now been without fresh drinking water and plumbing for several days, while an effort is being made to supply them and other affected areas in the same conditions. Columbia has also issued a Boil-Water warning to all 375,000 of its water consumers, informing the residents not to drink any non-bottled water without boiling it for at least a minute and that an ice produced during the flood should not be used unless boiled. Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, said “… I anticipate that the damage will probably be in the billions of dollars … Some people lives as they know them will never be the same.” Columbia has received a record 24 hour rainfall.

President Obama has issued a disaster declaration for the state of South Carolina, ordering it to receive federal monetary support and resources.

Many people have been rescued off their roof by helicopters patrolling the areas. Water patrol has also rescued people stranded in their cars and flooded homes. People are coming back to finding their houses looted. Vandals are breaking into deserted homes are stealing everything including, TVs and jewelry, among other things. Many highways have been detoured and others have been granted partial service. Officials think it is going to take weeks or even months to asses the stability of all the roads and highways. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has reported there to be 175 water rescues and over 800 people in temporary housing. Nearly 30,000 people lost power during the bulk of the storm, and many are still without power. Residents are forced to rid their homes of all flood damaged furniture; the overall cost of possessions lost is in the millions.

There was a very serious potential of more dams breaking, and even more money being expensed for repairs and clean up. Eleven of the dams have broke, while another thirty-five are being monitored. National Guard members are helping with sandbagging operations and other efforts to help reduce the damage and prevent possible future dam breakage. Officials are conducting controlled breakage, which is the delayal of the breaking of the dam in order to allow citizens time to evacuate, as well as the limitation of damage and amounts of water from the breach.

The American Red Cross is pleading for any and everybody to take part in the rescue operations. Supplies are very much appreciated, as they are taking everything they can get. Columbia is in desperation of safe water. The entire state is in need for as much monetary support they can get. Gov. Haley refuses to release an estimated damage number, but says it is “Disgusting.” There are many shelters set up around the state, providing support.

As the week progressed, major highways are being opened and some of the clean up process has begun. Flood water is starting to recede, however, the environment is still unstable. Recovery is expected to take at least a couple of weeks, if not months. Nonetheless, the weather conditions are starting to turn around and the future look is looking brighter for South Carolina.

Blocks or Periods: A Study in Contrast

0

EastsBy: Steph Wetzel, Caroline Schnabel, Casey Vangelov, and Nicole Kacmierczak

According to guidance counselor Mr. Weber, the average schedule for a student with an average workload is 6.5-7.5 credits per year with two frees. However, schedules can vary quite a bit, but overall it is no surprise that East students have very busy schedules, and that results in a heavy workload.

“Students are taking different courses at different levels, ranging from the minimum to AP courses. The average workload can vary a lot,” Mr. Weber said.

Most importantly, a student’s workload can determine their stress level. Between core classes and after school activities, students tend to feel overwhelmed. Time management is challenging when students are trying to balance their time between school work, sports and clubs, and friends and family.

West Seneca East is one of several schools in Western New York that uses blocks instead of periods. They have four classes each day for 80 minutes rather than having nine classes a day for 43 minutes. They see the same teachers every other day which gives them two days to complete their assignments for that class. This system of classes is called blocks.

Madison Leis, a current student at West Seneca East, enjoys having blocks. “I feel that block periods are nice because you don’t have the same classes or teachers every day. The way our school day is set up involves us getting out a little bit earlier. I have plenty of time to do things outside of school,” Leis said.

The quality of the student’s work and the amount of pressure they are under is determined by the amount of time they have. “I have plenty of time to complete assignments because I have a whole extra day to get things done, and since I don’t have the same class every day, weekend assignments usually get more time to be done. I’m usually never overwhelmed with anything,” Leis said.

Having blocks would cause a drastic change in our schedules. Although we would see each teacher for the same amount of time, the teacher’s schedule would be changed as well. West Seneca students have two days to complete their homework assignments and therefore are provided with more time to ask for help and time to do more activities outside of school. Some students would prefer not to be in the same class for 80 minutes, and would rather have 43 minutes classes every day. Teacher’s lesson plans would also be altered due to the extended amount of class time. They would be capable of fitting more material in, but would not be able to see the same students every day if necessary.

Mackenzie Mages is a current junior here at East. “I have a love-hate relationship with periods. Sometimes it feels like you’re rushing and don’t have enough time to let certain material sink in. The amount of time I have after school is dependent on how much homework I have to do for the next day, and if I have clubs or any extracurricular activities,” Mages said.

Block periods could lead students to procrastinate due to the amount of time they are given, or it could lead to them putting more of an effort towards it. Perhaps some students would find it less beneficial to spend more time in the same class each day. However, it appears that teachers benefit from the extension of time they are given. They are capable of providing students with more information. “Sometimes teachers don’t have enough time to go over things with you that you need to know for the next day. Most teachers then expect you to go home and learn the rest of the material on your own,” Mages said. “Some nights I’m not done with homework until 11-11:30 at night because I had other activities or appointments right after school. Sometimes I don’t finish my homework, so I’m stuck doing it in free the next day. The work isn’t like it would be if I had the time.”

Time management might also be improved if students were given something like a 30 minute break during the day. Due to the fact that some students do not have free periods, eight hours of classes plus homework and other activities can become overwhelming. Having a 30 minute break in the middle of the day has been discussed amongst teachers. Mr. Taylor has put the idea into consideration; however, he believes students would frown upon the idea because he would have to extend the school day to accommodate it. The school day would end at 3:15 rather than 2:46.

While it would be a benefit for students who don’t have a free period in the day, often it’s a student’s choice not to have a free period. “We take this into consideration by allowing students to eat during classes, even though this doesn’t always work out,” Mr. Taylor said. Teacher’s schedules would be changed as well, along with after school hours for sports and other activities. This is kept into consideration because of the amount of Board meetings this would require.

Social Studies teacher Mr. Wright said, “I’m a proponent at first of all saying, no student should have nine periods a day. We should have some sort of a thirty minute break. No one break would be the same. The school could be creative with its structure. It could be a quiet break in the library, or students could go to the gymnasium, or if it’s nice day, go outside. Even other schools, ninth period everyone is free, which would be a time for homework and to meet with teachers. It would serve as a way to reduce their stress.”

“I don’t know a lot about how they benefit over our type of schedule, but if there were studies showing a concrete difference and block schedules were better, then the schedules might be considered for change through the Board [of Education],” Principal Mr. Taylor said.

The Pat Kane Saga

0

pkBy: Jason Phillips

One of the biggest NHL stories over the summer has been the investigation of Buffalo native and three time Stanley Cup champion Patrick Kane allegedly raping a female at his Hamburg home after a night of partying. This whole story started on the first day of August when Pat Kane and several of his friends went to Skybar in downtown Buffalo. They met some girls and brought them back to Kane’s house, culminating in one of the girls going to the hospital to have a rape kit administered to her.

From the start of the investigation process it should be pretty clear cut. There is evidence that she was at his home on the night in question and she had the rape kit administered to her right after that evening; this is probably enough evidence to get a warrant from a judge to test Pat Kane’s DNA. If his DNA matches the one found in the rape kit then the case should be done and over with. However, for two months this case has been dragged out without a clear reason; the only official response has been that no comments can be made as the investigation is ongoing.  Recently, however, word has come out that there would be a grand jury hearing on whether to officially charge Kane in a few days.

However, this hearing was postponed almost as suddenly as it was announced.  The attorney representing the accuser held a press conference out of the blue even though there had been no official word from either side of the investigation for the past two months. He claimed that the bag containing the rape kit was delivered to the victim’s mother’s house. He called for new federal investigation to start and said that the Hamburg Police had been inept in handling this specific case, calling it the strangest thing he’s ever seen in thirty years of practicing law. The attorney then resigned the next day, saying that morally he could no longer represent the accuser. A day later he came out publically and explained what happened and how we together need to figure out what is going on with this case. It’s even stranger that the Hamburg police said they never lost the evidence and the bag delivered to the house of the victim’s mother was a fake. Hopefully this strange saga will sometime come to an end with an official word of if he will be charged or not.

Bills Fail to Rally Against Giants

So much has happened in the NFL is just 2 weeks. Even though the season has only just begun, major storylines have emerged. Probably the biggest story so far is the holdout of Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor. Chancellor, one of the NFL’s most intimidating safeties in the league, refused to play in the Seahawks first 2 games due to a contract dispute with the team. This left a major hole the league’s best defence. Chancellor will return week 3 in hopes of salvaging their season

The Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts have also started a disappointing 0-2. The Saints and Colts both have playoff caliber offenses but their lackluster defenses are preventing them from winning ball games. Eagles, despite starting 0-2 still have a realistic shot of winning the NFC East. We have only seen glimpses of the dominate Chip Kelly’s offence this season. If the Eagles offence starts to click, they have a shot in beating out the

Cowboys, who have QB Tony Romo and WR Dez Bryant out with injuries for extended time.

The New England Patriots, reigning superbowl champions who been called cheaters all offseason after the deflategate incident once again asserted their dominance over the with decisive wins over the steelers and AFC rival, Buffalo Bills. The Patriots lucked out this season with, QB Tom Brady winning an appeal that nullified a 4 game suspension. Without Brady, it’s unlikely the Patriots would be having so much success early on.

Along with the Pats, the Cardinals, Cowboys, Packers, Falcons, Panthers, Broncos, Bengals and Jets, are the only 9 undefeated teams left. The most surprising name on the list is definitely the New York Jets who finished 4-12 last season. The Jets got CB Darrelle Revis and WR Brandon Marshall in free agency, both of whom have greatly improved the team. They have a solid offense backed by an even better defense who have already forced 10 turnovers in their first 2 games.

The Cardinals and Packers have played like title contenders thus far. The Cardinals, lead by QB Carson Palmer, have one of the most efficient offenses in the league. Since last season, Carson Palmer has only lost one game. As long as Palmer doesn’t get injured again, the Cardinals should be favorites to win the NFC West.

Reigning MVP, Aaron Rodgers and his Green Bay Packers are back at it again doing what they do best: winning. After a big win versus the seahawks last week, it appears that the Packers offence will be just fine without Pro-Bowl WR Jordy Nelson who is out for the season with a torn ACL.

The Broncos despite starting 2-0 look shaky. For the last 3 seasons we have grown accustomed of seeing QB, Peyton Manning pick apart defenses. This season however, it looks like age has finally caught up to him. At age 39, Manning threw 2 pick-6’s before throwing his first TD this season, a troubling sign for the Broncos.

Pro-Bowl wide receivers Julio Jones and Antonio Brown, two of the best wide receivers in the game, are pulling their weight for their respective teams. The Falcons appear to have bounced back from their 6-10 record last season. They’re much improved on defense and their offense as potent as every, making them favorites in the AFC South. The Steelers Antonio Brown has over 300 yards in just 2 games. The team welcomes back they’re Pro-Bowl running back Le’veon Bell who finished serving his 2 game suspension and should be starting come week 3. The Steelers scary offence make them the favorites in the AFC North.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneer’s and the Tennessee Titan’s hope for better things from their rookie QBs Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, who were picked 1st and 2nd overall in the 2015 draft. Both quarterbacks have both shown great potential but have also struggled against NFL defenses and schemes.

Another “rookie” QB, Tyrod Taylor of the Buffalo Bills, has made a splash in the NFL. Tyrod Taylor, who has been back QB for the Raven since 2011, won the starting job for the Bills due to his explosive play style. His ability to make explosive runs out of the pocket, and deliver the ball to other Bills playmakers, makes him a great fit for the team. The concern with Tyrod, is the lack of pocket awareness, a skill he needs to develop in order for 1-1 Bills, under coach Rex Ryan, to end their 15 year playoff drought.

With 15 more weeks to go, anything can happen – this is just the first chapter. A bad team can start to make things work and potentially make the playoff or elite team can lose a star player that could end their hopes of winning a Superbowl.

American Horror Story Season 5 Preview

Picture1By: Stella Brady

As you may or may not know, American Horror Story  is a horror (you guessed it) TV show that airs on FX. This past Wednesday, the 1st episode of the 5th season aired. This year’s season is “American Horror Story: Hotel,” which has already made me never want to stay in a hotel ever again.

This year’s season stars Lady GaGa, rather than Jessica Lange, who has been the star in the past 4 seasons. I personally prefer Jessica Lange, having an emotional attachment to her because of her amazing roles prior. Some other cast members are Evan Peters (my personal favorite cast member of all time), Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Kathy Bates, Michelle Pfeiffer (that white gold), Wes Bentley (Remember Seneca Crane from the first Hunger Games movie? That’s him), and Max Greenfield to name a few. This cast is HUGE according to IMDb.com.

The set of the show is an actual hotel. Say goodbye to people wanting to stay there. It’s Hotel Cortez in Los Angeles, California. According to Wikipedia, this season is linked with the first season (my favorite season) “American Horror Story: Murder House,” which will be interesting to see how they’re linked together.

Quantico: Not a Masterpiece But Worth a Watch

QUANTICO - "Quantico" stars Priyanka Chopra as Alex, Dougray Scott as Liam, Jake McLaughlin as Ryan, Aunjanue Ellis as Miranda, Yasmine Al Massri as Nimah, Johanna Braddy as Shelby, Tate Ellington as Simon Asher and Graham Rogers as Caleb Haas. (ABC/Craig Sjodin) DOUGRAY SCOTT, AUNJANUE ELLIS, PRIYANKA CHOPRA, JAKE MCLAUGHLIN, JOHANNA BRADDY, GRAHAM ROGERS, YASMINE AL MASSRI, TATE ELLINGTON

By: Ananya Nrusimha

One of the things that makes Quantico unique in this year’s fall TV crowd is its diverse cast of characters; the main character, Alex Parrish, is an Indian-American played by popular Indian actress Priyanka Chopra, and the supporting cast features a variety of ethnicities.  This is one of several elements that works in Quantico’s favor; the show so far is solidly entertaining even though its plot may seem overly generic to some.

The show (which airs on Sundays at 9:00 PM on ABC) jumps between past and future. In the aftermath of the biggest terrorist attack since 9/11 (this time they’ve bombed Grand Central Station) main character Alex must figure out which of her fellow FBI trainees is the culprit while also treating the viewer to extensive flashbacks about her time at the eponymous FBI academy in Quantico.  I would gladly watch a show that was just about Alex going through training.   Her fellow trainees are all interesting, likeable characters, and those portions of the show have a sort of ‘Harry Potter meets Mission:Impossible’ vibe to them.  While the ‘future’ aspect of the show presents an interesting framing device, Quantico doesn’t need it; the training academy is presented is done well enough to stand on its own.  We are told from the start that none of the characters are what they seem, and the show does a phenomenal job of revealing their flaws and discrepancies.  Pay attention to every detail in Quantico – even the inconsequential aspects of dialogue and scene will have greater importance later.  However, it remains to be seen whether the show’s main mystery component – the identity of the mysterious terrorist Alex is trying to track – will be as good as its subplots.

Do not watch Quantico if you dislike mystery or intrigue.  Avid Bollywood movie watchers who are eager to get more of the Priyanka Chopra they know and love will also be sorely disappointed.  However, most viewers should find Quantico at least mildly entertaining – at the very least, it’s a good way to kill time.

Top Five Fall Movies

Picture2
By: Claire Kim

Ah, fall. That season where school starts, stress levels climb, and when one will inevitably seek out productive procrastination to achieve. In the spirit of all this, we’ve decided to compile a list of some pretty good-looking movies that are coming out for the rest of the year 2015. Be it with your friends or your family, we’re confident that you’ll be able to enjoy at least one of these this year.
‘Spectre’ (November 6th)

When in low spirits, action franchises are always a good pick-me-up. And with the new installment in the James Bond set to come out early next month, there’s an excellent reason to go out to the movie theaters. The latest movies have been getting increasingly darker and grittier, and this one seems to be no different. Procrastination recommendation: watch when you need something darker to drown the darkness within your soul for a little while.

‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2’ (November 20th)

It seems that the Hunger Games have been dragging on for awhile – perhaps because of the (unnecessary, awful) decision to draw out the last book into two long, full-length movies. However, like it or not, this will be the end of it – the second half of the book trilogy’s last novel. For people who have read Mockingjay, you know there’s some massive plot points coming up…now there’s nothing to do but to see how they play it out. Procrastination recommendation: don’t procrastinate on procrastinating by procrastinating on watching this.

‘The Hateful Eight’ (December 25th)

Directed by Quentin Tarantino (and assured not to be a sequel to Django Unchained), The Hateful Eight has eight strangers, each with an unsavory career path, who are forced together during a blizzard in a mountain cabin. Procrastination recommendation: if you’re a fan of Django, than go for it. If you’re a fan of Samuel L. Jackson, go for it. Just go. Leave your responsibilities behind.
‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ (December 18th)

  1. J. Abrams is a name that action movie fans should tip their hat at – he’s the one who revived Star Trek and continued the Mission Impossible franchise. Now he’s tackling one of the most respected movie series of all time – Star Wars. We’re still waiting to see if he’ll make it or break it, but with his track record so far, I think it’s safe to assume that Abrams will be able to successfully avert the disappointment of Episodes I-III. Procrastination recommendation: two words. Light sabers.

Eleven Killed in Afghanistan Airplane Crash

acBy: Leena Sen

On Thursday, October 1st, a C-130 plane crashed at Jalalabad airport in Afghanistan at around midnight local time.  Six of the 11 killed in the crash were of the US military.  The five others were civilian contractors.

The particular aircraft is generally used to carry heavy cargo and troops.  Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said their group shot down the plane on Twitter, however there is no proof that this actually occurred. The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

This crash has occurred at a time at which around 10,000 US troops are stationed in Afghanistan. There are plans to withdraw troops as of earlier in 2015, and President Obama as promised to keep only a small force at the US embassy in Afghanistan come the end of 2016.

Similar to this crash, an Indonesian military aircraft crashed in a part of Medan, in northern Indonesia.  Over 140 were killed in that crash.
